freelaner 2 making strange screeching sound, video attached

Hi all,
I have been recommend to this forum by a friend.

last time I drove the freelander 2 there was no problems at all. Today when I started her up she is making a strange grinding and screeching noise that appears to be coming from belts and pulleys. A few people have suggested it could be the air con but im not sure.

Below is a video of the car making the noise, do you guys have any ideas as to what could be wrong.

Many thanks

Yer I can't really sum it up, thanks though! I will be taking it to the garage on Monday so I will let you know, it would just be nice to have a rough idea before!

Not an expert but it sounds like it could be a bearing in a pulley or tensioner, but lots of things being run off of one belt makes pinpointing it a bit trickier. On a couple of different cars we had similar noises to that due to a failing alternator and water pump.
Does it make the noise continuously or change with more revs, You mention the air con does it make any difference if it is on or off ?

Bearing, Alternator, Idler Pulley, you won't know till it's stripped down and and bearings spun.

Add belt tensioner to that list. Cheaper than a bearing but not necessarily a warranty item.

Now, for my two cents as this has just started occurring on my 2007 2.2TD4 GS...

First of all, I noticed a sort-of lumpy rattle from inside- particularly when first starting up and idling.
However, yesterday, the rattle was accompanied by a sharp clicky, screeching sound- like when a plastic pulley is spun dry on a metal shaft and it "buzzes" and slows down. This was also met with a temporary fractional dimming of the headlamp bulbs.

As soon as the engine speed is increased (and held at, say, 1500rpm) the sound disappears until it returns to idling speed-then back to the sporadic, clicky rattle.
Looking under the hood, I have pinpointed the sound to the front of the belt/pulley area.

The sound is pretty much what the original poster's video portrays, so am assuming it's that clutch pulley on the alternator.

Is there a standard alternator that is fitted to the Freelander 2?
According to my service history documents, the alternator was replaced in 2010, and so I'm not sure whether it would be a like-for-like part, or a different brand of alternator, and so I don't know where to start with looking for a replacement clutch pulley.

What should I be looking for?

Thanks! Smile "We're in danger, we've got to get out."

Have you seen this video and comments?

In this case it was the belt tensioner. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Sounds to me like a failed bearing. Derek Hill

My son had a noise a bit like that on his Renault Clio some years ago, a week or two later the waterpump failed and threw off the cambelt with the usual consequences £££. Since most cambelt problems are are actually waterpump or tensioner or idler failures rather than the belt snapping I would get this checked out rapidly. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I’d go for the one way clutch pulley mine did this takes about a hour to change pretty easy just take the aux belt off and spin it by hand it’ll be solid both ways.

The sound I'm getting is definitely more like the original poster's video...

The last fifty miles or so, it has managed to shut-up, although I suspect it will be back soon...
I gave the alternator pulley area a spray with GT-85 spray (and gave the belt a wipe immediately afterwards in case it eats into the belt).

I have ordered a replacement pulley which appears to match the one currently on the alternator- it has a black cover over the end with a small dimple/hole in the centre. Reg check appears to confirm that's the right part.

Now, is it an easy job to replace with the alternator still in place?
Didn't I read somewhere that the "special tool" needs to be modified in order to reach into the space?

If it's too much of a fiddle, it'll be going to a garage to be fitted...

As for the water pump comment... Mine was replaced in 2016 when the cam belt was done, so it shouldn't be that thankfully. "We're in danger, we've got to get out."
