For those who may be interested I've now installed a Garmin Nuvi 2797 LMT Sat Nav unit in place of the previous Garmin 1490t. The 2797 has a 7" screen and is a perfect fit in the OE space. It is fairly simple to fix - about two hours all up at my pace - and works very well, with much improved maps compared with the 1490t. The rear view shows the made up brackets, which fit in the original fixing holes.
Very pleased with it so far.

I've done similar, just used cable ties on the back rather than a metal strip.

Hi egipp, did the power connector from the 1490t fit the new unit, or did you have to replace that too? MY10 TD4 SE Auto

G'Day Impact, The two power leads look identical and have the same plugs either end although they have different part numbers, but the 2797 has an additional socket to do downloads and up dates etc unlike the 1490 which only uses the one socket for power and data. I did try the new power lead - from the 2797 - with the 1490 and the 1490 worked without a problem. From that I assumed the 1490 power lead would power the 2797 without a problem also but, in the event, I replaced the power lead with the new one supplied with the 2797 although I'm pretty sure I didn't need to - belts and braces I guess!

Thanks very much, egipp. that sounds great. I have my 1490t hardwired so not having to redo the cabling would make me very happy. I just went out this lunch time and bought the2797. looking forward to the weekend. MY10 TD4 SE Auto

Well, Hello all, I don't know what I did and I can't delete the last two posts....I am sorry.

Done! Garmin 2797LMT is fitted and ready to route. Last night I did some extensive reading of the licencing agreement for the “life time map and traffic updates” thingy that Garmin bundles with the unit. Couple of points to note on the subject; they define “life time” as;

1) Such time as your device is unable to receive map updates due to “insufficient space” remaining on the unit.
2) Their “supplier no longer provides the maps”. Sounds unlikely but it has happened in Australia last year when Garmin stoped their association with Census and signed a new agreement with Navteq. I believe lots of people have been left high and dry.

Nowhere on the box does it say how much memory the unit ships with. It is only when I opened the box and plugged the unit into my PC to update the software that I was able to see in “my computer” that the unit has 2.6GB free of 3.4GB. I am guessing the actual size of the internal memory is 4GB. So, I did some more research and learned that the largest size micro SD memory card the unit will support is 32GB. In order to prevent the unit from running out of memory and myself from having to dismantle my car in the future to get to the SatNav I decided to purchase the larges and the fastest micro sd card that it can take – SanDisc Ultra 32GB Class 10.

Now a few comments on the installation of the unit; In my case the unit didn’t quite “fit right in”. There were a couple of “rudimentary” bits of thin plastic either side of the unit (1 – 1.5mm) that I shaved off with a box cutter. I believe the bits of plastic are there to help locate the storage compartment on the SE model. And since I don’t believe I’d be going back to that layout, I decided to remove them.

I attempted the reuse the hardwired power connector that I had left over from the Garmin 1490T. The unit turned on but came up with a message “accessory not supported”. So I ended up replacing the power cable too. The unit has one power connector and one data connector. The data connector can be left hanging in the glove box so you never have to remove the trim in order to update the maps.

In my case, the unit has been secured behind the fascia with black automotive silicon (as can be seen on the photo), just like the last unit (1490T).

I’ve also downloaded an app for it “SmartPhonelink” that has a really cool feature. Let’s say you’re looking for a cinema in your area.
1. You start the app on your smart phone,
2. type or speak “cinema” into the search box of the app,
3. Browse the list of available cinemas and distances to,
4. Select the one that takes your fancy and click the send button to send the details to your satnav.
5. The info immediately appears on the satnav screen
6. Hit accept button and you’re on your way to the cinema!

The initial experience with the unit has been very positive and the voice command can understand me just fine even though I lack an American accent.

Impact: How well does the silicone hold the device when you touch it, do you get any movement at all?
