Louder than normal rotational noise

Hi chaps, I've had a faultless FL2 for a couple of years now but very recently I can hear a rotational noise (my words) from the engine bay when the clutch is fully down and as the clutch engages (in neutral) it gets louder until drive is engaged and then it disappears.
It's consistent, you can do it over and over again.

I'm almost certain the clutch is on it's way out based on the bite point but before I leap to that conclusion since it makes the same noise when the clutch pedal is fully down, could it be related to the dual mass flywheel?

I know very little about the inner workings, have an extended warranty (not with LR) but I'm not sure where to turn/start.

Thanks,

To be clear, you're saying that with the gearbox in neutral and the clutch fully up you don't get the noise? If so that would seem to point to something in the vicinity of the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate. It could be something or nothing though.

Are you finding that gears can sometimes be harder to engage (which could suggest the clutch is not disengaging fully)?

Is the bite point on the clutch now high or low? The clutch is hydraulically-operated, so changes in bite point could be due to something as simple as air in the hydraulic fluid.

I assume you're not getting any problems with clutch slip in the higher gears, or you'd have mentioned it.

Does your warranty cover the clutch - many don't?

Thanks pab.
The noise does seem to go away when the clutch is fully up, it's only at bite point and when fully down that I can hear it.

Gears all seem ok, nothing unusual or any slippage - just this rotational noise at idle and as the clutch engages. I can only hear it in neutral as the engine note rises above it in other gears.

My warranty doesn't cover wear and tear but it does cover all other aspects which I'm hoping this might come under! 2008 FL2 TD4 XS Zermatt Silver, Manual

It sounds to me like the clutch release bearing, The bearing its self is only under pressure and rotating as pressure is applied to the clutch pressure plate to disengage drive from the crank hence you are getting the same noise every time you press the clutch

Hope that all makes sense

Agree with Steve T.
If it's not too noisy, it can last a considerable time depending on your driving style.
Try not to depress the clutch pedal while stationary at traffic lights/ junctions etc. ie select neutral. Otherwise it'll put unnecessary strain on the release bearing and shorten it's life.

Big job to replace it followed by 'while it's apart Sir, we might as well also replace.........'

Thanks chaps. Good advice.
Wonder if I can get the bearing done under the warranty and whilst they are there get the clutch done cheaper too Wink 2008 FL2 TD4 XS Zermatt Silver, Manual
