Remaining On-Topic

To comply with the Ad. Team's insistence that "threads" must remain "on topic" the author has deleted his original post content as it did not match i.e. the content was "off topic" for the AD. Team's chosen title for their thread: "Spelling Lesson". One must remain on topic mustn't one.

So here we are then "on topic":

HAVE PHUN

There's only one member on this forum that is equipped to judge that - the lord of time - The Doctor.

For information though there's nothing wrong with phantasy as opposed to fantasy just a bit old fashioned and older English rather than more current American style.

Phantasy the more "current" American style.

Sorry to interject here, but I simply cannot let such an inaccuracy pass.

English borrowed fantasy ~ phantasy from the Old French, though its ancestor was Latin phantasia (from Greek). However the English word "fancy" has always been spelled with f- despite emanating from phantasy.

In the Germanic group, the Scandinavian languages, Dutch, and most English words beginning with ph- are of Greek origin, but consider the interjections phew (spelled so, to avoid confusion with few). Or phit, and phut in go phut “go bust” (phut, a twin of phit, is a loan from the ancient Hindustani; thus, Anglo-Indian).

In telephone (an historically very modern word) in which one might risk deviating from the spelling of its ancient etymon, only Italian modernised and chose the form telefone, while French, Spanish and the English retained the existing i.e current use of the ph.

Fashion and style be damned - the all come around again and again as can be seen in any tailoring, architecture, art, film and language.

Therefore when all things are considered, in this debate the digraph ph is absolutely useless, and no one will weep if it goes away - except possibly the copycat Americans who simply haven't an original creative lexicographic thought in the collective heads.

And where's the US phancy - stat the current fancy in daily use in LA, NYC; in fact across all 52 States.

No offence at all intended to our LR2 friends across the big pond. But as you can see the spelling phantasy has been and has remained substantively a current style throughout the centuries, and is not the exclusive sole property or a modern current invention of the American language.

Each man to his own - fantasy or phantasy - there's no need for the Guardians of spelling or style to interject here. Both are relevant provided they remain in their own appropriate playground.

Strange, I rather thought that what I said was that Phantasy was older English style and perfectly acceptable (if a viewed by some as a little archaic) and that fantasy was a more "American" style. Your post is quite a complex piece to
de-construct but I think, in the end, that you are saying nothing different?

My use of the word "current" merely reflects the reality of American spelling of words being increasingly used and accepted in this country. I am astonished that I should be challenged for the use of the spelling of phantasy in the first place and even more astonished by anyone being bothered enough to write a short treatise on the subject.

I will now return to using the forum as a reference site for matters concerning FL2's and rather hope others do too!

Au contraire, mon ami - I think your post shows that you have grasped the essence of the piece completely. Well done!

American English Censored me right off and the fact no one appears to care much is worrying.

I blame equipment with Amercan Software built in, which must be most computers and phones, where predictive texts/typing puts in the American version of the word, namely words with a "z" instead of an "s like 'Prioritize' and no one bothers to correct it.

And don't get me started with the word "Mom" instead of "Mum", Grrrrr.

It's not how you say it, it's how you spelling it that marks the man from the boy.

I agree but for clarity, what or who are the Ad. Team's or AD. Team's you refer to in your first post? Grammar laddie, grammar! Mr. Green

Edit: "It's not how you say it, it's how you spelling it that marks the man from the boy."
