Seat Mods!

After 6 1/2 years of use, the drivers seat bolster was starting to get a bit soft. So before it was too far gone and the leather got beyond recovering, I bought a new seat base foam from LR and a new heated seat mat, just in case we could'nt get the old one off.

So here are the new parts :-

Here is the drivers seat before anything was changed. Some will say it doesn't look too bad, and to be fair it didn't look too bad, but I didn't want to wait until the leather had stretched beyond recovery.

You can also see a bit of saggy leather where your backside sits!

So Steve at Classic Car Services set to work on removing the seat base.

The good thing about the FL2, is that the base can be removed without the whole seat having to come out.

So hear is the seat base out, not looking too bad, but the bolster spong had gone quite soft.

Old and new next to each other.

Steve could remove the heated seat element from the old sponge, but on the drivers bolster, it had rolled over itself and was not looking tidy, so I decided to go ahead and use the new one to ensure it was all perfect.

Steve then put it all back together, and re-fitted it to the car. The leather cover was cleaned and heated during the re-fit to remove all the sag's in the seat, and about 90% of the creases were removed from the bolster.

So very pleased. But the best bit was sitting in the seat after the work was done, you don't realise how bad the old one was until the new one is in place. It is back to being a very firm/supportive seat!

Ive done a few myself over the years and there not all that bad to do npinks.
The covers are held to the seat base via like a wire spring system then in turn held together with ogg rings and as a rule a have plastic trim that turns inside out on its self under the cover and frame its self (they run round the edge of the cover to give the cover correct tention).
Hard to explain but its as much about patience and keeping your cool that anything else.

Cheers Guys! Thumbs Up

The parts were not too bad, £74 inc VAT for the seat base and £54 inc VAT for the heater mat. This was with 15% discount too.

Steve didn't charge me for fitting which was good of him.

I could have saved myself £54 by using the old heater mat, but I figured that at least I know it will be right by using the new one. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

The dealer has changed the cloth seat cover on my MY11 under warranty as the bloster on the driver's door side was showing signs of wear and it looked as though it would wear through. The only issue is that they did not replace the foam base and there is a bit of slackness on the actual base of the seat ie where the backside goes! It is tight everywhere else. Not sure if I can tighten this myself or is it just that the foam is sagging and the cover is never going to be absolutely tight? Cant really be bothered going back to dealer again with this--always a hassle! Thanks.

Makes me wonder if they haven't bothered to fit new hock rings. The seat base cover should be totally tight along the seat seem. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Mav, do you think it would be possible or indeed feasible to fit a totally new cover from a newer model to an older model. IE new dynamic covers to a 2008 HSE?
My seat base is showing a small amount of wear to the seat base and i'm contemplating either changing it like you have done, retrimming or buying new covers from the newer model.

Very good job Thumbs Up

good to know that the base seat can be removed (and then sold I guess) separately.

I have an issue with my driver base seat on my FL2 2012 (premium windsor leather) ... the problem is that the seat is squeaking a bit. is seems the squeak comes from the jonction between the seat and the plastique base as shown on the pic below. any idea please ?

thx

I think that this has been covered before. I recall that using a fine sandpaper between the leather and the plastic (abrasive area to the plastic side) resolves the squeaking issue.
