Is this a fault?

Hi All,
My Freelander 2 has developed an annoying noise.

After turning off the engine there is a "continuous ticking" noise - imagine the noise you made with a piece of card in your bicycle spokes.

It appears to come from a die cast assembly roughly the shape of a fat banjo at the front of the engine, between the oil filler and the dip stick

Any ideas/comments/advise would be very welcome.

PS I have a 2008 TD4 GS 2.2 diesel with 43K on clock

regards
Bernard

I don't think so.

It's not a rattle it's very like a continuous tick-tick-tick-tick rather like a motor driven device with something catching.

As I said imagine a cigarette card in the spokes of a bike - thats the best I can come up with.

I'll take a photo tomorrow - if I can get one clear enough

Bernard

I think Nick has hit the nail on this, Throttle Box Resetting, it's shredded e or in the proces of shredding the gears.

Perfectly normal part of the vehicle systems shutting down.

Seems we have conflicting opinions from it's Censored ed to Thumbs Up and only an investigation will tell as we can't determine a noise without hearing it .

The throttle body doesn't do a lot really other than help give a 'judder' free shutdown and perhaps aid DPF regeneration at times, but the noise will dictate if it's normal or not.

The motor will be resetting the flap and a 'whirring' and 'click' type sounds are normal as it finds it's limits and eventually opens in readiness for the next start, but if it goes on too long then stripped plastic teeth will prevent it from positioning as has happened with some others.

Hi Guys,

This morning the noise stared immediately I put the key in the slot (engine not running)

It continued after removing the key for a few minutes then stopped abruptly.

I took a photograph of the item making the noise but I cannot figure out how to include it in this post

How's that

Although I don't see it on preview.

I'm not getting the BB codes against my pic, so I took the above from the properties of the pic

Thanks guys,

The noise is coming from behind the grey cover which is a folded closure

I suppose the questions now are :-

Do I ignore it - and hope it goes away - I know it won't but if it doesn't harm the engine is it important enough to have repaired.replaced

Do I get it repaired/replaced - Is it repaireable? (probably not by any registered garage)
What is it likely to cost to replace

Bernard
