MOT Failures

MOT due in May, and goy a call from dealer about being able to get it done a month before, which I knew about anyway. Now it's all computerised, if it fails if I get it done in the month before original MOT date, does the original date still stand, or does the new result take over which means I would be breaking the law if I took it away, got it repaired , and then presented on the original 12 month date
My first thought is the original would still stand as I have a piece of paper with the original date still on it. Ideas thoughts gratefully accepted.

The mot piece of paper you have is worthless and no more than a receipt for a completed mot.
The actual legal status of your mot is recorded on the VOSA / DVLA data base.
If you take your car for an mot before the previous mot expires and it fails you monthly outstanding balance is worth nothing, your car has failed and as such doesn't have a valid mot.
Used to be the exact opposite when paper mot's existed.
By taking a car for an mot in advance of the required date means you are potentially giving up a valid mot if it fails.
Not very sensible in my opinion. Thumbs Up

But if it passes you would have 13 months of mot? Same as old system.

But if you take it on the due date you still have 13 months mot albeit you have already used one month of it which you paid for previously.
You don't get anything for nothing. Thumbs Up

if you are driving a car, which knowingly is not fit for the road, be that bald tyres, accident damage, etc your on the wrong side of the law/rules

So in my opinion, you take it, it fails, you need to get it fix asap and redo the MOT, depending on what it is, you can then drive from the MOT test centre to a place were repairs are to be done only, not to the shops and back etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

And if you take it a month later like I will do with my bike, they backdate it ! Still the cash flow is better and I haven't let the nasty salt worms loose on the exotic Swedish suspension and gorgeous forged aluminium OZ wheels ( the back one alone is worth a set of 19" landrover pimp wheels Whistle ) 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I’m not sure if I’m interpreting the latest MOT rules from the government website correctly but if the vehicle fails the MOT test, the existing MOT is void no matter how long it has left to run. The vehicle can only then be used to drive to a trader for repair or an MOT station (same one as failed it) for a pre-booked retest. So if my vehicle fails, I cannot drive it home and repair it myself because I’m not an official motor trader or my home isn’t a garage.
The joys of motoring.

Err, where did you hear that from? It is impossible to backdate an MOT. On a vehicle with no MOT, the certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issue irrespective of when the previous MOT expired. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Might be getting confused, I know something was backdated when I had 3 bikes in the Garage, and I did get an 80 quid fine on the KTM so it must have been the VED that was backdated 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
