Strange noise from rear of car when reversing on full lock

Hi All,
My 57 plate Freelander has suddenly developed a strange "clunking" sound that only happens when I am reversing on left lock.
It is coming from the rear of the car so I suspect something is amiss in the rear diff, or haldex unit?

It sounds as though something that is revolving has come adrift, as although only at slow speed, the noise frequency of the clunking varies with speed.

Any ideas or advice please?
Cheers
Dave

Hard to say without hearing the sound. I would start by eliminating the "cheap and easy" obvious items. My first port of call would be the handbrake shoes to check that they are adjusted and seating properly. If not they can move a bit and may cause the clunk. Clean out the drum, re-adjust the handbrake shoes and see if there is an improvement.

Diffs tend to whine not clunk and I doubt that the Haldex would make that noise. John

Check wheel bearings. I had the same issue and thought expensive fix, diff etc but turned out to be bearings.

I had the clunking noise on my first Evoque (same as the FL2 underneath)
turned out to be the PTU (Front diff/transfer box) had stripped the splines and required a new PTU and new gearbox fitted by LR.
