Front grill change

Does anybody know if the front grill is bonded or has fixings to secure it to the plastic bumper, mine has had a poor repair job done to the grill by a previous owner and I need to change it, not keen on the HSE grill even though it is an easier option. mmaarrkk

Think it's part of the bumper, if you converted it to the HST type it involved cutting the old grill out with a Hacksaw and sticking the HST one in with 3M tape.
You could always remove the bumper and fit the Facelift one Question

Not 100% on the freelander but on more or less every other bumper i have built up over the years in my trade (a lot of bumpers ).
The bumper come with plastic locating lugs that you slide the grill over the melt to flow the plastic lug over the grill to hold it in place. Its done this way so you dont get masking lines on the grill when its been painted!
If its on the original bumper every lug will be melted over but if its had a replacment at any time chances are you will have a few left to melt over as 90% of todays tradesmen are only out to make bonus and not a good job hence its come away from the fixings.
If it turns out your lucky and have some lugs left to melt you should be able to melt them over with a soldering iron.

Hpoe that helps

No problem mark,
To revmove the old one where you see the plastic melted over we use to use a small belt sander to file the melted plastic away so the grill just pulls away without any strain on the bumper its self.
I wouldnt expect you have a belt sander but im sure you get he idea behind it,you could maybe work out away to do the same sort of thing with the tools you have so you dont risk any damage to your bumper.

Take your time and dont rush it and you will be fine mate

My word is as strong as any picture, to change the grill you just have to apply yourself , however if you lack practical skills then I would leave the job to someone who has ! mmaarrkk

I have just replaced the standard grill like for like, was difficult to find the replacement but one came up on eBay ,worst part of the job is removing the bumper itself , after that if you've got a decent multi-tool for cutting around the raised melted down pieces that hold the grill to the bumper the grill will separate from the bumper easily enough, after that a decent 'preferably a butane' soldering iron is what's needed to re-melt the raised tabs back down to secure the new grill to the bumper, as Steve said in a previous post some of the tabs may not have been melted down originally so these can be made good use of when fitting the new grill . The fresh grill has made a real difference to the front end ,I'm really pleased with it.
