I don't have this combination, but since it's possible no one else here does either I'll throw in my thoughts.

There have been various versions of TomTom car kits - some with built-in GPS receivers, some with some kind of GPS booster, and some with neither. Which type is yours?

Does TomTom work OK when not using the car kit? If not we can discount the car kit as being part of the problem.

It sounds as though this all worked before you upgraded to iOS6? What problems are you actually experiencing?

I have the Tom Tom Car kit with the built in gps booster & Car Kit Tool App
No Tom Tom does not work OK without the Car Kit
It all worked perfectly fine until ios6 but i have contacted Apple many times only to be told its a Tom Tom Problem.
Tom Tom have given me various fixes but none has worked correctly even after the latest update.
The major problems are it keeps losing the GPS signal and the map spins around trying to find where it is and reports "POOR GPS SIGNAL"
I also have problems with the Car Kit no longer charging the Phone when its plugged in i keep getting the message that the accessory does not support charging.
Before ios6 i had none of these problems and it worked 100% of the time now its more like it works 20% of the time
I have a new Iphone 5 on order so will wait to try it on that as i think the lastest Software may no longer support the use of the in built GPS on the car kit and i have read that the new Iphone does not need any extrenal GPS as the built in one is much more powerful?
Thanks for your comments i will let you know how it goes

As mentioned I don't have the TomTom kit, but I do have a 3gs now on iOS6 and quite often use the GPS capability - occasionally in the car (using CoPilot Live plus google maps) and also when out walking. I've never found the GPS sensitivity of the 3gs to be a problem, and almost never see the poor signal message. I do note that there are many comments on TomTom in the app store reporting poor GPS reception, and this did seem to be a TomTom issue. It seems to be better in current versions though?

I do sometimes see the 'does not support charging' message, both when using my (non-TomTom) car charger and when using various ipod docks. The phone usually seems to charge OK despite the message, but it can be irritating if it keeps popping up!

If you haven't already I'd be tempted to try one of the free GPS navigation apps to see if you have similar problems with them. If you do it may be there's a problem with the phone itself. If you don't it's a fairly clear indication that the problem does lie with TomTom.

Thanks Pab
I am convinced its the TOM TOM App thats the problem as like you i also have Co Pilot installed and that works well.
I only use Tom Tom as i do prefer the clearer map compared to Co Pilot but for the time being until Tom Tom sort the problem i will be using Co Pilot which proves its not the phone or car kit at fault.

Thank you too - this has been a useful thread as I've been thinking about buying the TomTom app now the price has come down a bit. Now, however, since I'm using a 3gs and iOS6, I won't!

I have a 3Gs with ios6 and Tom Tom app. No problems at all with it. I do use a Brodit active phone holder, not sure where the GPS chip/receiver is in a 3Gs but I know that if the phone is handheld in a car it gets its knickers in a twist.
