HDC ? Not working

I am able to engage the HDC in 1st (manual) it seams to work as it slows down But I am unable to change the speed on the control knob. Any idea why its not working? Curse control up and down work fine.

When using HDC the cruize control increases the mph by .3 of a mph, the control knob if I understand what you ask is the terrain response

Page 136/137 of the manual HDC can be used at speeds below 50 mph and you can alter speed as I said.

David's car is a manual, and on the manual (except, iirc, the earliest ones) HDC can only be used in first gear and has a target descent speed of around 4 mph. As indicated, the cruise control speed buttons can be used to vary the descent speed by .5kph/.3mph per press - or press and hold for larger changes.

My own experience is that the descent speed can't be reduced much below 4mph, presumably because it would be getting too close to the engine's idle speed. I've also experienced what felt like the engine pushing against the brakes when I've used the brakes to reduce the speed further. I don't recall having tried to increase the descent speed - I'll have to try that some time.

On a manual HDC will work in 1st, 2nd and Reverse, it will also work in neutral.

Minimum speed in 1st or 2nd is 4.7 mph in Normal, GGS and Mud Ruts and 6.2 mph in sand. In reverse the minimum is 5mph.

Reverse, yes, but second seems to depend on the car - in my 09 manual in second the HDC light flashes, a message comes up 'HDC not available in this gear', and it doesn't work.

Neutral is an interesting one. The manual says no ("When using HDC in vehicles fitted with a manual transmission, depressing the clutch pedal will prevent HDC from controlling the speed of descent."). But I do seem to have had HDC working in neutral when depressing the clutch when HDC was already active in first. But that's clutch depressed rather than gear selector in neutral - I don't think I've tried that!

HDC will also work with the engine off using pressure built up prior to you stalling it going up a hill

I would assume it would work in neutral as HDC uses the brakes?

Also, you won't be able to increase the speed to keep you at 20mph for using on the road! Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Im not sure what scenario you have been using this is, but it is meant for very steep hills, the sort you find once or twice on wrynose pass in the lakes

Maybe on a slippery hill, but bear in mind that HDC will eat away your brake pads and discs a lot quicker

Scenarios where first gear and 4mph is plenty, usually due to ice... Smile

This is most often on the approach to my house - there's a tarmac section about 70 metres long and very steep. Get it wrong and lose it on ice or snow and there's the house at the bottom to bring you to an abrupt and expensive halt!

Regarding HDC in neutral, a quick test shows that as soon as I move the gear selector into neutral from first or reverse the HDC light starts flashing and I get the 'not available in this gear' message. So this suggests that, on an 09 at least, HDC doesn't work in neutral, but I haven't tried it for real on a steep descent.
