Loss Of Engine Oil

Had second service done on Friday 2nd by a LR Dealer. On way home from work tonight I noticed the rear window looked wet but thought no more about it, even though it wasn't raining and the roads were dry for a change. Five minutes later came out to find a big pool of oil under the car and on closer inspection the underneath of the vehicle was nicely coated in oil. Checked dip stick and it showed a lack of oil in the vehicle.
LR Assist coming out in the morning to have a look before I enter into a friendly discussion with the Dealer about what may have happened to cause the oil to drain away.

Maybe not screwed the oil filter on tight enough?

I think you should expect an invoice from Land Rover for about £200 for winter under body protection Laughing

+1 on what Mona Geeza said or a loose sump plug. Seen it in a workshop loads of times, the fitter does it up finger tight...then goes for a cup of tea! John

LR Assist came out this morning. Found the sump drain plug lying on the undertray. Enterprise Rent a Car delivering an Evoque this afternoon and Freelander on its way back to a very apologetic Dealer who are coming down tomorrow to clean the oil off the drive.

That is bad Mad
Did you have a warning light come on at all Question
It must have emptied the complete sump and I would hope that the dealer would give a written guarantee against a future engine failure due to this, plus benefits.

Is it possible to let us know who to avoid in future Exclamation

I would be extremely concerned of the condition of the engine and turbo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you did a miss-fuel Landrover would walk away from any warranty ! unless you spend about 3-5k on replacement parts.

Me thinks time for new engine and turbo !

Accidents happen but its the way its dealt with that important

No warning light.
Car is going in for a full diagnostic check. Fortunately most of the oil leaked out while the vehicle was standing on the drive so I suspect there is no long term damage but I'll be having a chat with the Dealer about it and the other recompense they'll be making.

At this stage I'd rather not name and shame as I cannot fault the Dealers response and they've accepted full responsibility for what is probably a one-off.

Also cannot praise too highly the LR Assist Technician who came out and also the various members of the LR Customer Care Team I've dealt with so far.

LR assist are great.

Lets hope the dealer deals with it in a professional way.

There is no way of proving when the plug fell out ! the appearance of most of the oil on your drive would be caused by the oil collected in the under tray. That may give the impression the bung fell out on the drive. The oil loss had to be major to cause oil up the back window !

Remember if the boot was on the other foot and you had allowed it to run low on oil there would be no warranty !

I'd imagine that the plug has only fallen out as you pulled on your driveway. If it had in the journey then you wouldn't have the plug on the undertray still...and the engine would have been starved of oil. If there is only a slight mist on the back it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

I would however ask your dealer about possible consequences. Their diagnostic equipment will not be able to tell if the engine/turbo has been damaged. Just to cover yourself in the future, make sure you have all correspondance recorded in writing. If they tell you on the phone that they will cover any oil starvation consequential damage in the future that may be ok for you, but if the dealer goes bust/ that member of staff leaves you'll be in trouble persuading another dealer to foot the bill. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Have got the LR Assist Report filed with the Dealer Service Record and once I get it back I'll start discussions with the Dealer about guarantees in writing. Annoying thing is it was running really well after the Service and I was getting over 40 mpg for the first time so it wasn't all bad.

I agree the plug probably finally dropped out as I turned onto the drive or as I stopped. There was still a slight trickle of oil from the sump when the LRA guy had a look this morning. Just glad it didn't happen during the week while I was out and about.

The only person who never makes a mistake is the one who does nothing.

It's not the making of the mistake, but how you recover that matters. If the dealer has held his hands up, and is making a genuine attempt to right the mistake, he will probably come out better for it. I had an incident a few years ago with a local dealer, he was upset about the mistake, made amends, and has had my custom ever since.

I agree, that in this instance something in writing should be freely given, oil starvation can shorten the life of components just as easily as causing sudden failure. As mentioned, staff move on, memories fade, franchises change. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
