2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black
Turbo actuator arm

Hi all

This is my first post - even tho I've been a member since I purchased my FL. Its a 2007 HSE with 40k on the clock. Until yesterday I'd done 4k of trouble free driving Laughing

Over the past week or so I'd been experiencing something that felt like a 'misfire' or the car slipping out of gear. No warnings or lights on the dash, and didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it ... so just ignored. Got worse yesterday happening about 5 or 6 times on the way home accompanied this time with a "Reduced Engine Performance" message.

Took it to dealers in Cambridge this morning ... phoned at lunch and they've diagnosed a stuck / corroded turbo actuator arm Shocked fortunately there is a replacement kit (as opposed to a new £1000+ turbo I guess) for £280 fitted. Just hope this is the actual problem and this fixes it...

Anyone else experienced the same? And anyone used Marshalls Cambridge - experiences?

Thanks

It's a known problem and Land Rover had emitted a SSM for this.
Here it is. Maybe you can reduce the costs, if you know what I mean... Wink

Thanks for this - what is a "SSM"? The kit is just £43 on brit part - and your SSM below lists 0.6 hrs? Is that labour time do you think?

The Anti Squeak Grease (LR029042) is quite pricey!

Nearly £38 for 80g! Why is it that much I wonder? Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

Being in the area of turbo and exhaust manifold, it's a special grease that can withstand high temperatures.

Just had the turbo replaced under LR warranty following several instances of Reduced Engine Performance. Dealer said that the problem was indeed the turbo actuator arm but LR no longer make the repair kit available so they had to replace the whole turbo. Thank goodness it was under warranty.

Turbo actuator 'reduced performance'

Hi there,
New to the forum but have been viewing for while. I had to have my 2013 FL2 into local dealer due to the low performance warning a few times in the last 2 weeks. Garage found the same fault this morning, and confirmed it was giving the actuator position error codes. They cleared the faults took it fo drive and could not replicate it again (I've had it 3 tim s in last 2 weeks). They've said as they can't replicate it again they will give it back to me. I think this is terrible as I've read on here they know it is a common fault and there was a SSM back in 2012. It's under warranty until end of May 2017. I don't want it back until its fixed but do I have grounds for refusing it back?

I'm away on holiday on Saturday and don't fancy trying to drive it 150 miles down th road. Land Rover dealer seems quite happy to give it back!

Hope someone can provide some advice?

Cheers

There seems to be a series of failures of either turbos or the EGR valve system with MY13 vehicles around 50K. Mine has had to have a EGR unit but it was a year out of warranty.

If your dealer is not able to offer a solution to your satisfaction I can only suggest you contact the warranty provider to ask them what they are going to do about it as its a known problem.

I assume if your car fails on your holiday the warranty kicks in, read the small print and use and abuse in full what they have to provide if you are left having to call out recovery people a long way from home. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks for replying Bob, I've got assistance also and they have given me a hire car for 48hours. However, I can't understand why they want to give me my vehicle back when they have acknowledged the fault occurred for them once. They've claimed that the warranty company won't cover if it has not catastrophically failed. Having occurred 3 times in the last week and once for them I think it's pretty save to say I'm going to get stranded on the motorway straight away.

Wish me luck!

Luck:

If you get the Red Triangle coming up and you drove on your warranty company would wash their hands of you. I would be putting them into a complaints procedure at the slightest showing of any more grief and no action. Red means Dead according the LR and recovery.

Having said that I drove around for a couple of weeks with a EGR fault (no warranty) whilst I finally had to accept it needed a EGR Valve not just a sensor. I knew it was not the Turbo as it only blew the Red Triangle when warm (limp mode) and you could rev the Censored off her if you wanted (not recommended) from cold. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
