I was in Halfords the other day buying some screen wash and spotted some fuel additive. It makes big claims but does it deliver?

If you were to buy and pour it in, how much MPG difference would you reckon there would be?

in my shop we use similar aditives as a routine mainteance with an oil change.We use it mostly as a preventive treatment for injectors and fuel HP pump.Some customers reports smoother engine running and less smoke some dont see any diference.No MPG improvement confirmed as it depends on lot of other factors .Brand probably doesnt matter - all these aditives are made one the same base.For your information we tried these brands :Wynns,STP,Cyclo,Pro-Tec,Liqui-Moly...Give it a try and you will see....at least it doesnt hurt anything

Certainly gave a noticeable boost to my old F1. I also had an EGR bypass and Synergy 2 power box. (What a difference they made )

The combination of the 3 gave plenty of power on tap I did about 90k total 70k of which was with the EGR/Synergy2. I generally used to buy a bottle of Millers for a holiday as a 'treat'. There always seemed to be a noticeable difference with the Millers in.

I replaced the high pressure pump around 120k and the low pressure (tank end) pump went about 4 weeks ago. I think is better than the average expected for F1s and I guess that could have been due to the millers keeping things clean/lubricated

250Ml of 2 stroke oil per full tank of diesel should give similar results for a lot less cost. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

I tried Wynn's and didn't notice much difference. Get slightly improved mpg with 2-stroke oil. BP ultimate seems to help too. Best improvement I've seen was running my old TD5 on recycled bio-diesel, but I haven't tried it on the FR2.

I used to use Millers when I had my Leon, but they were reknown for problems with the DPF.

On cost savings alone it doesn't make enough of a difference, and barely any change in running characteristics either. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

My Td4 Freelander 1 had no DPF so wasn't an issue. I could definitely tell when I'd added it to a tank.

That's not necessarily true...BP Ultimate is approximately 10p more per litre than normal unleaded. 65 litres = £6.50 per tank.

1 bottle of Millers, £13 from Halfrauds.Wilco Direct do oit much cheaper. But at £13 per bottle from Halfords, 7.5 tanks per bottle = £1.73 per tank

Hmm that's an interesting observation. I am open-minded about this whole area, and therefore was looking at the 250ml oil per tank process seriously.

However the cost was something which I was baulking at. Is it finacially better to just go for a premium diesel?

Just bought 2L of 2 stroke oil for £10 that's enough for 8 tanks of diesel, that sounds economical to me but then I am a Yorkshireman. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

Millers is cheaaper if you get 5 litres of the stuff from Wilco. To be honest though, FL's without a DPF I would only put in for a couple of tankfuls a year to make sure everything's cleaned out. With DPF, probably more often. A more efficient engine gives off less smoke, which fills the DPF slower  Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

But make sure what you are adding is low ash (eg the more expensive types of 2T oil) or it could fill up your dpf quicker!
