Air Con Noise?

Hi all,

My new 2012 SD4 has developed a noise when the air con is on which sounds clattery and buzzy? Any ideas?

Thumbs Up

My bet would be an aircon compressor bearing failure.

Had my air con compressor replaced last month under extended warranty. Had been noisy for months especially when pulling up to junctions, definitely the air con as the moment you pressed econ button the noise stopped, buzzy whirring noise re-appeared when A/c back to auto.

Guys at team valley did a good job and got it replaced.

Now no unexpected noise, in fact very little noise at all from A/c.

Have you had it back to a dealer yet - I am curious to hear what the problem was - an aircon should not pack up like this on a brand new vehicle.

When I bought mine it had 900miles on the clock and a noisey air con - the clutch was replaced at 1500miles under warranty. So mileage and age have nothing to do with reliability in this instance. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Technically speaking an AC pump should never fail unless

gas overfill or suffered a hydraulic lock on start up after initial fill !
under-fill of gas causing continued clutch cycling
insufficient oil fill
Moisture in the system when assembled ! causing internal freezing and pressure imbalance
contaminated system , moisture or debris
clutch failure, normally caused by outside elements ( debris or salt corrosion)

If I ever had to replace a pump I would remove the pipe work and wash through onto a blue cloth and allow the cloth to dry and then place under sunlight or bright lamp ! if there were any sparkles it meant there was metal contamination throughout the system which will cause further failure in the future ! so few techs ever carry out this procedure its very worrying !

Noise cured by regas

My 07 developed a noisy pump and also the fan gave a metallic vibration sound. All cured by a regas. The refrigerant extracted was only 160gwith oil down to 5ml, and the regas topped up to 750g refrigerant and 15ml oil. The low pressure was obviously making the pump and fan work off their duty point ( pressure vs flow). Now all nice and quiet. Smile

Easy answer for dealers is to say needs new pumps etc.
The kwikfit fit engineer did say it was not guaranteed to stop the noise ( which is fair as the pump is a sealed unit). But too low a pressure will certainly effect the pump performance. £49 well spent.

LR2 07 noisy fan

Hello, id like to ask if someone could tell me why my lr2 07years model, inside cabin the fan starts to have noise and it sounds like metallic noise and sometimes it depends that kind of RPM i use on car. I have to stop whole fan and start again, but still the metallic sound comes back. is it possible that its on the low pressure what you have told? recently i went to AC service, there was only 10g of left and now it was filled back to 750 may this cause some harm to fan / ac system

Sorry but you may need a new pump(not cheap)
Did they check for leaks?
Someone on here tested the fan to see if the noise stopped when they stopped the ac fan and it did so they replaced the fan
Mine is also making the same noise and booked into to get re-gassed on Tuesday..Fingers crossed..

Try doing a search there is lots on this noise.

I have just started getting this noise too. Switch a/c on and it starts. Turn to econ and it stops. Should I try a regas first or am I looking at a new compressor (is this the same as the pump?)?

my air con does that.. when i switch it on it does a worrying noise, to then settle down in 15 seconds.
I took it in to the dealer and they found my gas low. when i took it back it had stopped being noisy.

BUT i noticed that the pipe going from the compressor to the back of the engine, rubs on a engine rib... thus wearing through.
it was very badly worn. I put some tape around it to protect it.

a week ago the noise started again...

SO:
I was wondering if there is a slow gas leak at the point where the pipe is worn, causing the gas to escape and the noise to return.

if you have 2 minutes, check the pipe in your car it its also worn, we might be on to something here...

My 10 developed the same noisy pump and the fan gave a metallic vibration sound, like other people here. Big Cry
The inconvenient is audible only inside the car, with all windows closed, and specially with the first, second and third gear, around 1500 and 2000 RPM.....but unfortunately is still present anytime too.

This saturday i will bring the car to the dealer for a "regas" ( he said this is the first step to resolve the case).

Crossed fingers.... Bow down
I will report to the forum.
Ciao.

Mines making the same noise after the dealer refilled yesterday, 6 months old and 7k miles. So clearly being new doesn't matter!!
