athelstan: the OBD II Dongles are used with some software on iphone or android devices to reset those damn DPF Full messages on a monday morning!

I got one of Fleabay and have been using it for a while now. Works pretty well.

Movies from DVD to the iPad?

You need to "rip" them on to your computer using somethign like Handbrake
old guide here: http://www.applesource.com.au/software/soa...531,00.htm

You need an app on the ipad to play the files - you could use VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ios.html or as I use http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/cinexplayer...98375?mt=8

I think with both apps you go to the settings to determine which of your "ripped" DVDs you want to put onto the ipad

LRFTW, you don't need an app on the iPad to view the movies if you rip them with Handbrake. You can encode directly to iPad format. Handbrake it then drag and drop to iTunes and sync with your iPad.

works a treat!

Good stuff - I usually rip to a compressed format to take less room hence why I needed the other app

Knoxy / LRFTW - thanks for the tutorial - much appreciated.

Well after examining the true costs of the offer made by my mobile network provider I've decided to buy direct from Apple. Speaking to one of their staff I've also chosen not to buy the iPad (3rd Gen) Wifi + G4 Mobile Connect as with that you have to take out a data download contract with a mobile provider plus buy that SIM card.

So for our needs its going to be just the iPAD 3rd Gen with Wifi. Now the only question to resolve is capacity - 16 / 32 or 64GB? There's a substantial price difference so I'd like some input on this before I do the buying.

How much storage capacity does the average film demand? And, how much storage does the average music CD demand - knowing that I can then calculate my daughter's in car audio visual needs.
Thanks

2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

I have the 4g model direct from apple and now pay £10/mth rolling contract (no minimum) for 2gb data on orange and the convenience factor is amazing. I umm'd and ah'd for ages almost convincing myself that wifi only would be fine since there are so many hotspots around. Thankfully i took the 4g model since i have found wifi hotspots that work far and few between, even though my orange deal includes free bt openzone.

Regarding memory, 32gb is the minimum for the 4g model since the retina apps, pics and hd movies are huge compared to the older ones. If you are going to load up a fair few sd movies then 32 might do, but if you want allmthe hd stuff then you may be sorry you didnt take the 64.

I took the 32 because movies were not important for me and i preferred the 4g, but i have already used over half the 32gb with apps and some music. If i wanted to store several hd movies then things would start looking tight. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

Average film in HD, such as the digital version that comes with a blu-Ray is about 1.5 to 2gb a film

A ripped movie will be less

Sorry for the slight Hijack Richard, but it is iPad related, dose anyone know if there such a thing as a card reader for the iPad, something I could plug my Sd card into plus allowing more memory

Thumbs Up Nick

was thinking of the Camera thing as we have a large family wedding at the end of the month, so would be useful to show all the photos on the pad, instead of the camera screen, if that makes sense

Should work, just pop the SD card in, down load, delete if needed to get memory back if your sdcard is full, and snap away

You'll then be able to show photo with just the iPad whilst snapping away, I dont think you be able to use it as a monitor whilst snapping away though
