Conti 4x4 Contact M+S, 235/55/R19 105H questions...

Evening all,

Ive just had a pair of the above fitted. They we not what i originally ordered and only realised the mistake when I got home ( My 3yr old son was creating and that also explains the bill £50 cheaper then expected Embarassed )
I had asked for Conti Cross Contacts....

So Ive got a couple of questions.
1) I'm never going to exceed 130MPH so is it a major issue that these are a 'H' speed rating and not 'V'?
2) As these are branded as a M+S tyre and I do mainly urban/motorway miles are these going to cause the FR2 to handle badly?

Ive read some mixed reviews and im starting to worry... Sad

Any help/info etc gladly received.

Aaron

I have "H" rated tyres on my FL2 but I had to declare them to my insurance company as they are not a standard fitment. They charged me a small extra premium but that was OK 'cos H rated tyres are cheaper than V rated in the main. Also, the insurance endorsement is "modified wheels and tyres" which means I am now covered to put Volvo wheels or whatever on it. Thumbs Up So, I would definitely declare them to your insurance company.

H rated tyres will cope perfectly well with whatever the FL2 has to throw at it bearing in mind the diesel version is flat out at 112 mph if you were daft enough to go that fast.

The car will handle fine with M+S tyres. Lots of people on here have them and have not reported problems. John

JST,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I hadnt thought about declaring them to the insurance, but ill give them a bell in the morning to let them know. best to be sure for the sake of a couple of ££. Thumbs Up

*edit* I already have the modified wheels/tyres on my insurance as the 19" shadow chromes were an optional extra... but ill check anyway.

I had an email from Michelin who said it was okay to use 'H' rate on FL2 but that was 108 load.

I also asked my insurance who said it was fine providing I didn't change the wheel size other than recommended by L/R. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Tyre speed rating recommended by L/R is V rate which is quite frankly crackers as it is a 149 mph rated tyre.
Try find a V rate winter tyre, most are H rate.

The best way to cover yourself is from the tyre manufacturer Thumbs Up

In any event, the max legal limit in the UK is 70 mph. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I would not bother telling the insurance. Majority of people who change tyres don't know what a speed rating is let alone the size. They just want the cheapest tyre. 1000's of people change there tyres daily and if everyone phoned the insurance company to check they would right p!ssed off!

Chances are the insurance will want to pull down your pants, in the worse case scenario you have a crash and die explode etc etc the insurance assessor will come out look at the damage and not even notice the tyres. If you killed someone and the police were to examine the car they would check the tyres, but it's very unlikely by going down a speed rating would of caused the crash.

Oh and Jst it does more than 112mph (gps not speedo) Thumbs Up

When I replaced my Conti 4x4 CrossContacts R18s that came with my 08, I put a considerable amount of research into the speed rating of the tires as there were many more H-rated tires out there. The consensus of owners was "no worries, nobody goes 130MHP". The consensus of people in the tire business was "speed index is related to the stability of the tire; don't get anything other than the recommended speed rating". I went with a V-rated tire. Interestingly, my LR dealer was recommending an H-rated tire.

FYI, I got only 30 000km out of my CrossContacts and I'm pretty easy on my vehicle. I expected a lot more.

It it were me, I'd make a fuss.

PLEASE make sure you tell your insurance company if you have anything that is not the rated tyre (Door pillar and / or handbook). If you ' disable ' a family your insurance company will be looking for every possible excuse to avoid the lifetime care costs (Sadly, I know a family where one adult and both children were disabled in a car accident and the lifetime care costs were £6+ Million). FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

What if mrs miggens buys her used freelander 2 from the local skoda dealer, with the lower speed rating on and has no clue about the tyres? There is thousands of people in this situation.

they will be fine, most 4x4 road tyres are m&s rated they will still prob only be 80/20 or 90/10 road biased, and as for the speed rating.. as already said, just let your insurance know and if they are anything like my insurance co they will say firstly - they aren't bothered (as long as they are fit for purpose) and secondly- they will say... "what is a speed rating?"!! Rolling Eyes Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the replies. Gave the insurance a 'quick' call and promptly ended up spending 15 minutes explaining what speed ratings were. (Admiral call centre Rolling Eyes )

in the end they told me they were not interested and it didn't class as a modification.
