Knocking noise

Hope someone can help. My freelander 2 (07) has recently developed a significant knocking noise. Sounds like its coming from the rear but hard to tell. It varies with speed (ie gets quicker as the car does) and occasionally disappears - although not for long. I can't see anything obviously wrong with suspension parts front or rear. It happens when freewheeling as well as when power applied so don't think its engine related - diff????!!! Big Cry

Diffs tend to whine , rumble or howl not knock. I would start by checking the brake pads and the handbrake shoes. John

You can tell if its anything to do with brakes by applying them. If the noise goes away then its prob the brakes

Wow...
There are 5 of them.
One missing, if the others are tightened corectly, isn't noticed...
Are you sure the others were properly tightened?

They weren't particularly loose, but having torqued the rest up, the noise has gone - even with the 5th missing. All tight now!!!!

Keep an eye on them - if it's been running loose the holes in the wheel could have gone oval, and this would cause the nuts to loosen again. If that happens it's a new wheel I'm afraid.
