sound a bit like turbo/air type noise ?

Don't worry, it's the turbo. And sounds quite normal.
You didn't notice until now because when you have all windows closed you won't hear it.

If its the turbo, then that's was replaced a short time ago Shocked

I heard the noise with my windows shut as te aircon is better with them shut, Thumbs Up

Farnells have said its a gas escape, could see soot, but unable to tell were from, will investigate further when in for service and mot, Thumbs Up

It's the turbo sound, not that you have a problem with the turbo... Very Happy
The noise as it hears corresponds with the sound of a turbo, as Ian said.
If it wasn't heard up until now, then it could be a small leak.
But all in all, the sound is similar to the sound of a healty turbo.
