Stone chipped headlight

Has anybody any experience of getting stone chips out of a headlight lens (cover)? Are the lens coated to protect them against UV?

I’ve picked up a couple of chips on mine and cant see anyway to repair the lens other than working through 800, 1000 and 1500 grit wet and dry and lots of elbow grease!

Is the lens cover glass? If it is w&d might scratch it?

Isn't there a product called jewellers rouge or something that is used to polish glass? Confused

No the covers are Polycarbonate.

Since I've posted this question this morning trawling the internet forums has show this to be quite a common problem. I've also found there are a number of proprietary kits available to 'restore' the factory finish and replace the UV inhibitor that seems to be used on the headlight cover

I’ll post on the forum as to how I get on!

Very Happy

I managed to remove some light scratches off an iPhone with this. Your Headlight will not be as tough as the iPhone screen so should work.

Ok, an update on the stone chipped headlight.

I brought a kit (see my link above) to remove and polish the chips and well yes it did the job. BUT, then polycarbonate lens has a UV inhibitor coating which I have now rubbed through, and although the chip has gone I have a ripple/ring in the lens where this coating was. So it’s gone from bad to worse, and I should have left well alone, so be warned anybody else that is thinking of trying this.

So I’ve now decided I’m going to replace the unit, which brings me to a number of questions:

1.Can anybody recommend a good/reasonable supplier for and MY11 projector style NS unit (im guessing I'll be charged an arm and a leg by my dealer).

2.Has anybody tried fitting these – I assume it’s no more difficult than removing the two top bolts and pulling the retainer at the back of the unit.

3.What happens about alignment and levelling? I assume on a new unit this is all pre-set during manufacture? Standing on the shoulders of Giants

Re your item 2 - look in your Owner's Manual - it tells you in detail how to remove the headlight unit. Very simple but go "with a gentle hand" as all the locking parts (except the 2 retaining bolts on top) are plastic and easily broken. My Swiss dealer (s) have employed gorillas to do this and broken absolutely everything in there, so I do this myself.

Re item 3 - they are simple plug and go and will align themselves if you have located the unit in correctly on its black plastic holding tray and locking arms.

Re item 1 - ask the site sponsor (20% discount given) or try ScumBay.

As mentioned with Item 1 above.
Ask Dan at Duckworth Parts for a price.
You'll need to give your VIN.
