High level brake light misbehaving

Open question here to any other members. My MY11 F2 has developed a fault that every time it rains (or gets washed) the high level brake light comes on and stays on - for up to an hour. The ordinary brake lights are un affected, and the high level stays on irrespective of whether the ignition is on or off and the car locked or unlocked!

It’s off to the dealer tomorrow for investigation but I wondered if anybody else had experienced similar problems?

They are well known for water ingress and although I have not seen one staying on like this I guess it will water at the root of the problem. A search should come up with a few threads on this. John

Thanks John, although I must say I am surprised with this fault - and I suspect that it eventually go's out as the warmth from the bulb dries the electrics out!

Strange, there should be no voltage with ignition off, it could be a suspect 'FET' in the passenger side fusebox. As said though, water can throw up some strange faults.

A suspect 'FET'? Can you explain please? I totally agree with you though that with the ignition off, and in the case of the ignition off and the car locked I would have expected the high level brake light to go out. Surprised

A 'Field Effect Transistor' will switch the battery voltage to your high level brake light when it receives an input from the command module, the 'FET' could be leaking voltage or it could be receiving a voltage signal to turn on when it shouldn't. Basically its an electronic switch with no moving parts unlike a relay.
Terminal 2 will be the signal to turn it on and terminal 4 will be the battery voltage.

A FET or Field Effect Transistor is basically an electronic switch.
It would be possible for water to turn on such a device and possibly power the High level light, although I would be surprised if the water could allow enough current for the light to come on, the FET would need power from elsewhere for that? is it dry down under the carpets in the passenger footwell?

Thanks everybody, the Freelander is in the dealers today, so I'll post on here what the 'findings' are. Apparently 'they' said it's the first time this fault has been reported! Wink

Well after 2 days of investigation my Dealer has reported that they cannot replicate this fault, or find out whats causing the High Level Brake light to come on and stay on. JLR Technical also say (to the best of their knowledge) this is a one off. Oh well.. Sad

One offs usually fetch a lot more when you come to sell them, tell the dealer when you trade it in, and it was confirmed by JLR themselves. Thumbs Up
Nice to have something no one else has.
