Reduced Engine Performance

I have a Freelander 07 plate. For the past five months I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with the car. With no warning the engine cuts out the message on the dashboard says Reduced engine performance. A range rover garage looked at it the first time the problem occurred and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The problem has occurred intermittently since. This week has been the worse. It has cut out whilst I was driving. Eventually it started again. This morning it wouldn't even start. The AA came and looked at it. No faults found and got it started but did say it could be to do with the fuel pump and/or the fuel sensor. I maintain atleast a quarter tank full. As it is intermittent it is hard to show the problem to a garage but now I have experienced it cutting out whilst driving I cannot continue without getting it fixed. Anyone else experience this problem?

Its such a generic fault message that it could be anything from a 'duff' sensor to the fuel filter, a 4/5 year old car should have had its fuel filter changed by now, maybe your first port of call!

I had similar, cutting out, no fault codes, turned out it was the Relukter Ring (spelling Question ) hence no fault code stored but never had the "reduced power" message.

Hi Parkgrove.
I've suffered the same problem recently. Hence my browsing of the net. Sudden loss power and then picks up again. Worse was a few seconds of cut out when crusing at around 2000 rpm with the i> Reduced Engine Performance warning
Have you found a fix yet?
> ad210358 - Whats a reluckter (reluctor?) ring. I'm familiar with them (reluctor rings) regards the ABS, but not fuel system. That of course seems my assumption. Damn engine management systems! Previous Series III, Defender, Discovery 300 and TD5 owner.

I picked up some poor fuel about 18 months back ( water in the derv) the car was almost un-drive-able.
I had the filter replaced and is sorted it out, it cost about £ 75.00 to check it out and replace the filter and about an hour's work.
It may be the filter !!! Good luck Thumbs Up

ethelthered: Reluctor ring located under the front crankshaft pulley together with crankshaft position sensor - exactly the same system as on ABS - generates signal which is used by ECM for determining the engine speed and crankshaft position.

Have the same error on mine at the moment, has happened twice 14days apart. Driving along at 3/4 to full throttle, warning pops up, feels like there is no turbo assistance at all, ring the AA they come out reset the computer (no faults found) and then its fine...

Any suggestions where to start?

Is there any way to reset the error with out expensive equipment?

I had mine come on around 4 months after taking delivery, LRAssist sent out the AA man as their Disco guy's had finished for the day and he just did a diagnostic, to clear the message. Said the DPF can get clogged up if you do a lot of town driving and that you need to hammer the gas everynow and a again to clear it out. Thanks everyone.
Ive tried the hammering it for 30/40 mins and going to try the fuel filter change. its almost like someone turns the engine off and then back on when it happens. Luckily the garage gave me a 1 year warranty, so me thinks its going back to them if the simple fixes don't work. Previous Series III, Defender, Discovery 300 and TD5 owner.

Are you low on fuel when it occurs?

There is a protection system that switches the turbo and other functions of showing up as reduced engine performance... 2012 DISCOVERY 4 GS AUTO ORKNEY GREY

Have had between 3/4 and full both times when it happened to me...

Wondering if a cheep eBay elm tool will reset it? A battery disconnect didn't but the Aa just cleared the code but couldn't read what it was. Freelander 2, 2014 Dynamic SD4 Santorini Black

Quick update on my experience of these symptoms recently, incase anyone following the threads.
I thrashed the Censored out of the car for 50-60 miles, added diesel injector cleaning/performance marketing fluid to the fuel tank, and problem slowly resolved over the tankful.
Could have been coincidence, or just water/muck in diesel. This time not an expensive fix! (yet) Rolling Eyes

I'vebeen having the same reduced engine performance message over the last year infrequently.

The last few days in the colder weather it got much worse to the point it decided to switch the engine off. A reset of removing the fob got it started again.

So i went to the nice people at les potts 4 wheel drive in sunderland. They agreed with my thoughts as to the fuel filter being the problem.

After about half an hour fuel filter changed and an error code printout showing low fuel pressure faults. The filter must have been choked. They said these problems got a lot worse in the cold.

All said my freel2 is driving like a dream now.... Very Happy 2002 Honda VFR800

I had Reduced engine performance message when I give it half throttle. Read on this forum about fuel filter so changed it, took no more than a hour and sorted the problem. For the cost of a fuel filter I am going to change it at each service.

Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, Essar and all other refiners belonging to the UK Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA) are subjecting diesel sold in the country to additional filtration tests following a spate of breakdowns this winter and last.

The British Standards Institution is investigating claims from fuel traders that additives to Russian diesel imported into the country are reacting with biofuels to clog up car engines.

The RAC says that it has attended thousands of breakdowns caused by the blockages and estimates that 9,000 cars may have been affected so far.

Any type of diesel-powered vehicle is potentially at risk and any brand of fuel may be involved but the greatest incidence has been recorded in the northeast of England and Scotland.

Britain imports 40 per cent of its diesel, most of which comes from Russia, a UKPIA spokeswoman said. She declined to comment on reports from Platts, the specialist fuel agency, citing traders as saying that Russian fuel was to blame.

Traders claimed that additives to Russian fuel to help the diesel withstand sub-zero winter temperatures were reacting with the biodiesel content, turning monoglycerol molecules into waxy globules.
