Engine shudders when stopping

Hi,

About two days ago, I noticed that my 2007 FL2 shudders more than usual when the engine is being stopped.
I put the car on P, press the stop/start button, and the engine stops with this annoying juddering at the very end.

It starts and drives without any issues. The screws do not seem to be loose, either.
When I gently press the accelerator (just enough to increase revs a bit), and then press the stop button, juddering is hardly noticeable - the engine stops almost immediately, like before.

Driving at low speed - no loss of power at all. Acceleration, engaging higher gears - no problems, either.

I'm not an experienced car tech, but it seems to be like if the engine was still getting a few drops of fuel, after the stop button was pressed. On low revs, it gives the engine just enough power to stall the shut down - thus the shuddering.

A faulty fuel cut-off valve, perhaps?
Or my assumptions are wrong, and it's a completely different thing?

I have come across simlar issues on another common rail engine and it was caused by a leaking injector. As the rail pressure is so high if an injector nozzle has become glazed or clogged the injector doesn't seat properly and may allow extra fuel to enter the cylinder causing a little cough when shutting down!
In the first instance it may be worth trying some injector cleaner to see if it has an effect.
I would try Comma Diesel injector magic. It will take a few days to take effect.
Also check engine oil level ! If its low is the turbo leaking oil into the air intake ? If its high seek advice from a diesel specialist.

Thanks for the hints.

Oil level was actually the first thing I checked - it remained within min/max limits (about 1cm below the max mark).
The turbo indeed leaked a bit, I've probably lost 1/2 pint of oil over last 6 months. Not sure if all of that was due to the turbine, though.

Forgive my ignorance, but how that leaking could affect engine shut down?

I've scheduled a check with my indy specialist next week, he will connect the car to an Autologic computer and check look for any error messages.
I'll try the injector cleaner in the mean time.

Mine too. Sometimes worse than others. Dealers have never diagnosed a problem, which is not a surprise Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Forgive my ignorance, but how that leaking could affect engine shut down?

If diesel is leaking past the injector as the rail is under extreme pressure, some fuel will leak into a hot cylinder and attempt to ignite, hence the little hump as it shuts down.

Sometimes a badly worn dual mass flywheel can also have a kick effect.

The electronic throttle, if malfunctioning, can lead to symptoms like this.
The ET is used to prevent engine shudder on engine shut-down and for limiting air intake during DPF regeneration. It's that piece in front of the engine that's buzzing when powering down the engine.
Someone here had problems with the plastic gears inside and repaired it.

Mine does this too, I thought it was normal as I cannot remember it not doing it. I have been using 2t for the last 12 month and have not noticed any difference.

My engine almost sounds as though it's 'running on', when the engine is turned off. I know this isn't the case, but it's the only way I can try to give an explanation of the way it feels and sounds. My Dad's 09MY will only do it if the engine is started from cold, moved a short distance and turned off. If the engine is warmed to operating temperature, and Censored down, it stops smoothly. My car generally 'shudders' when stopped, regardless of whether it's warm or not.

I think it must be fuel related or perhaps a sensor?? Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass
