Rear parking aid + 3rd party audio

I noticed that although LR's own front parking aid is only a factory installed feature, the rear parking aid can be installed by the dealer. I'm wondering though, does it use the factory audio player for anything, or is it independent of it? Because I am thinking of switching the factory player to a 3rd party one, but on the other hand I would kindof prefer LR's own parking aid to a 3rd party one, but I'm not sure if it would still be usable without the original player?

Short answer: no.
Long one: the LR's parking aid is sending information on the low speed can-bus and the audio systems knows "to listen" to that information and "beeps" accordingly.
If the third party audio knows that too, then no problem.

@dunroof
So, in the end, you needed to update to the CCF after installing front PDC, right?

I've asked because on the tutorial that you've posted about the PDC, you've said that there is no need to update the ECU. But it seems, from your sayings that it was already updated and you've forgot... Very Happy
I've saw that the CCF contains the informations about the type of PDC and therefore I was a little puzzled when you said that it wasn't necessary...
If it isn't too much to ask, please update the tutorial in order to reflect it for future DIYs geeks. Very Happy
For sure it is necessary, proof is the fact that the option exists and your friend needed to check it.

alex -- OK, I was afraid this would be the case. So I guess my next question would be, how do I know if the third party stereo I want to get supports this beep signal? Is the LR signal conforming to a standard that I should look for? Many systems come with input for parking camera feeds but that I am sure is different. I have been mostly thinking about a Pioneer AVH-4400BT (http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/25/109/281/AVH-4400BT/index.html) but it only mentions the camera input, but I am not sure what I should be looking for.

dunroof, thanks for the correction. Although as you say, I'm not sure if I need it for the front. However having something telling me I'm about to run over a Caterham 7 on reverse would be useful Smile

Coming back to some old topics Smile

Actually I did find that Pioneer provides what seems like a suitable adapter especially for FL PDC: http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/25/38/1...index.html

Whether this is sure fire enough to spend 700 eur or so on the official PDC upgrade... I am not sure.

I had the Alpine INA-W910R installed to completely replace the standard audio set up.
To get the front sensors working it required keeping the original unit in the boot and routing the fibre optics. From what I understand from the guys that did it, it's pretty complicated.
Having said that the Alpine unit works really superbly (had front and rear cameras added too, plus a subwoofer in the rear). They did such a good unit, you wouldn't know I had the original unit, or subwoofer, in the boot. 2008 FL2 TD4 XS Zermatt Silver, Manual

CG, I couldn't really find anything about the Pioneer adapter specifically, I think zone30 at least seems to have a Kenwood (http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic4005.html).

Chris, having two units routed together does seem a bit complicated and pricey to install. I'd prefer to go with the PDC adapter cable if I can be relatively sure that it actually works.

As a sidenote, I did notice Pioneer also came up with a higher end model than the one mentioned previously, 8400BT, which adds support for some iPhone apps -- sadly not Spotify. Not sure if it's worth the price diff, although there is a sat nav app supported...
