Standard Unleaded in an M3

I was quite surprised today when I walked past our local Shell garage and witnessed a guy putting fuel save unleaded in a brand new 61 plate BMW M3 Shocked (a white one I might add).

Surely a car of that power and performance should be run on V-Power. Is he likely to experience that 'pinking' thing putting normal unleaded in? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Many high performance cars are actually designed to run on standard unleaded fuel, but if higher octane juice is offered to the engine, the ECU automatically advances the timing a tad to take full advantage. So maybe he's not a boy racer and just wants to go to Tesco Laughing Cheers,

I see nothing wrong with what he did Confused
'V Power' is an option not a necessity, all cars will run quite merrily on any British fuel sold, without 'pinking' or 'knocking'. It is made to a standard and the option is there to exceed that standard for maybe better MPG or/and ever so slightly better performance.
Would you really notice 0.1 second off your 0-60 time in real life driving. Exclamation

It's very interesting what some people think...

I drive a 59 reg Audi RS6 Avant and I've used both standard BP & Shell unleaded
and the premium unleaded fuel from both and I can honestly say, I can't tell the
difference.

I only use BP or Shell and every 4/5 fill's I do use the premium one's. I NEVER
use supermarket fuel, both the FL2 and the Audi burn it too quickly.....

I'll just add, I'm no boy racer....I'm too old now Big Cry

I've used both standard Shell unleaded and the premium unleaded fuel , I can't tell the
difference in either economy or normal driving, maybe if a car is highly tuned and used to its max ( on track ) then it will be a different story.

For my race cars I use V plus and tetraboost ( Genuine lead replacement )BUT the cars are specifically tuned using this mix

My fuel consumption , in this weather, is between 30.2 and 30.4 reegardless of fuel used,in a FL2 auto, although I only use branded not supermarket fuel.

I think at around 8p per litre more it is a bit of a con for virtually all normal road cars

I would have thought that the car's handbook would stipulate the technical standard the fuel used must meet and these numbers are usually on the forecourt pump. I would surprise me if the "cooking" Shell petrol did not meet the BMW M3 standard. John

I think if I read the manual for my bike ( 10.500 rpm max shift 11000 limiter) it specificaly tells me that " super grade " fuels will not offer any advantage over the basic bog standard cooking petrol. Our company car policy specificaly forbids us to use Ultimate type diesels as there has been no real proved advantage v the increased costs based on most of our motors doing 80K miles in 3 years ( except mine which spends most of it's life in airport car parks Sad ) 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
