Exhaust camshaft breakdown

Did you hear something about this?
Especially the dealers that are here on the forum?
Because on our colleagues forum (http://www.lr-club.ru) there are over 20 documented cases on broken exhaust camshafts, especially on the connection with the high pressure pump.
The cars are mostly MY2007, up until VIN H060000.
On their forum someone says that in their Auto Review, there is a SUV comparison test. It is mentioned that now there is an upgraded high pressure pump, as on the previous versions of FL2s there is a possibility of breakdown on HP pumps and camshafts at about 80000 miles. So the subject has already leaked into the media.
Below are some pictures from the various breakdowns, courtesy of our Russian friends.

OOOOoooooooooooooooouch, that's nasty.

fiats used to suffer with that and it was caused by either too much oil in the vacuum pump causing it too hydraulic or moisture in the vacuum pump freezing overnight causing the end of the cam to snap on start up !
Thanks for the heads up. Thumbs Up

Poor machining/design, sharp corners propagate cracking, a very small radius would probably eliminate the problem.

My local independent specialist LR guys were selling off "for spares or repair" an engine with this exact problem. It was an 08 with about 48k on the clock! John

Alex - Just came across this after reading a post by Toadshall about the Ford spec 913 oil.

JST may be referring to us, but we still have an engine which ended up with this very issue.

Vehicle was booked in with a slight knock from one cylinder. We checked it as far as we could given the customer didn't want to spend out on a strip-down, but in the end we let it go out again. A few weeks later the vehicle was recovered by the AA from the M5 near Cullompton. It looked like a fuel pump failure, so we ordered one up and tried to fit it. Then the exact issue you've found had occured.

Interesting... Confused

Thank you for sharing your information...
What's a certainty it's that after VIN 8H092006, car that was made around February 8, 2008, Land Rover changed the exhaust camshaft with a new design.
The saga continues on the Russian forum...

A collage of broken cams, courtesy of our colleague Technician from the Russian forum...
All of them are pre VIN 8H092006 camshafts.
Next to the nicknames are written the car's manufacturing dates (obtained by VIN).

Our colleagues have changed the exhaust camshaft with the new design.
Read the topic I've posted in the first post. Use Google translate.
It's a long thread, almost 40 pages, but worthwhile reading.

Thanks for the summary Alex Thumbs Up

I'll have a read of the forum this evening.

Wondering if it's worth having the fuel pump replaced with the new design type at the same time? Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

I thought about changing the camshaft and pump on my 07 car. However, as it seems that the damage starts with the pump seizing/partially seizing I have gone for the controversial option of putting two stroke oil in the fuel so that the pump and injectors get a bit of extra lubrication. I am not getting into the debate about whether or not 2 stroke gives more mpg or a smoother engine.....decide that for yourself, but what is now beyond question as far as I am concerned is that to-day's diesel fuel is "drier" than before and hence does not lubricate as well.

You may think I am crazy but it gives me some peace of mind. Smile John

Good point Thumbs Up

I'm already adding 2 stroke oil so hopefully that'll keep the pump going a bit longer! Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

Modern diesel is blended with 10% bio-diesel (to save the earth Confused ), which, as JST rightly mentions, does not lubricate as well as 'proper' diesel. This is the reason we can't use bio-diesel in our tanks.

In the last 5 years, the mix on forecourt fuel has been uprated from 5% to the 10% it is now, so from a lubrication point of view, 2 stroke oil won't be doing any harm.

I only know this is correct for the UK...Europe/rest of the world is probably different. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
