United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

I've recently changed car to a 2007 Freelander 2 from an Audi A6 Avant 2.0TDI of 2006 vintage.

With the Audi, going purely by the on-board computer, I could get an average reading of over 50mpg on my half-hour commute to work, which is 20-odd miles of rural B-roads.
During the summer, it would reach an average of 60mpg if I drove it sensibly. The best average mpg reading I ever got was 67mpg on a really hot day on a rural A-road single carriageway with a few downhill sections.

Now, with the Freelander 2, obviously I anticipated an increase in fuel consumption.
When I drove it home for the first time, I didn't learn how to reset the average mpg reading, so during the 100-odd mile trip back from Birmingham to North Norfolk, the average mpg of 30.2 only increased slightly to 30.6 by the time I was nearly home.
That journey used approximately quarter of the tank, according to the fuel gauge.

Once I learnt to reset the display, my initial commute to work along the same half-hour route of rural B-roads in 14'C reached an average display reading of 39.8mpg under similar driving technique.
On the way home, it was warmer, and I felt rather chuffed achieving a reading of 43.6mpg once I arrived home!

Since then, I have maintained an average of about 40mpg.
Saying that, I do tickle the throttle, keep my revs low (it does pull well at low revs doesn't it!), and try not to rush about everywhere.
I know I can always give the turbo a clear-out on a nice quiet A-road every now and then... Very Happy

Would dearly love to
SWMBO has finally accepted that her Micra is a pile of Censored , and that the 178,000 mile FL2 is a very nice drive - especially in heavy traffic.

Now how do I legally get hold of enough folding for a Disco 4 before they stop making them Exclamation Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I wouldn't believe what you see on that display. I recently did a trip down to Portugal and back and actually kept all the fuel receipts and recorded the mileages because it was my first long trip with the car. When I got home my display read an average of 42.8mpg but working it out using the receipts the actual average mpg was 36. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

I always do the same when I buy a new vehicle (second hand new Smile )

Having just bought a 2007 HSE manual it has managed 7.9/100kms going at 130 on the autoroute with the air-con working. Seems to roughly match up with the onboard display. Only dead fish go with the flow

Thumbs Up

Crazy though it seems, even with a personal fuel bill north of £500 a month, I wouldn't change it for anything! If you could work out a way of getting enough cash together, they're brilliant Very Happy

Unfortunately the new ones are running out fast Big Cry and we now know they'll never build anything like it again Big Cry Big Cry

Hi guys... your figures are great! I'm not even near that.
My consumption is around 9,8 l/100 km (29mpg).... any ideas on what I might check/fix to improve these numbers?
2.2td4 with 140000 km on the clock

Thanks,
Juan

After not resetting my display for 2-3 weeks, my average MPG has settled to 39.0mpg and hasn't budged for a day or two now. "We're in danger, we've got to get out."

From my experience not resetting the trip after fueling up eventually leads to a loop situation and MPG read out never moves. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

MPG - oh no, not again!

OK, so first and foremost I didn't buy my auto SD4 because I wanted to save the planet etc......however!

Had the car for 2000 miles now and never really looked at the mpg other than to see that I'm getting about 31mpg doing everything from running to the shops to a motorway run. However the other day I hit the rest button on a run from Buxton to Matlock. Admittedly this is down hill and not the fastest of roads but I was most impressed at getting an average of 46.2mpg!

So I'm now intrigued so on a run to the lakes and back from Matlock last weekend with a bit of pottering about the lakes house hunting and a car packed to the rafters (even had to adjust my standard halogen candle powered headlights to avoid dazzling oncomers) I got 38.7mpg. I'll add that the motorways were free flowing and I kept up with everything else in lane 2 and 3 so thus wasn't a VW test conditions run!

Mightily impressed! Loving the FL2 - a joy to drive around the lakes and the car that keeps on giving.

Just need sone snow now!

Cheers and thanks to all who've answered my tech questions so far.

John

So after the first ~800 miles i've covered, i've filled up three times, on each occasion I have taken the odometer reading and brimmed the car. Second fill up it achieved 35.31 mpg, on the third fill up it achieved 38.44 mpg. Hopefully see this increase a bit after a few good long runs.

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Loire Blue

So for the journey from Hereford to Stranraer (355 miles) I filled up to the brim with Sainsbury's diesel.
The route was A49 to M56 then straight onto M6 J20 (105 miles). Journey was slow. M6 J40 to end of M6 (135 miles) a good clear run. Then off M6 onto A75 for 95 miles to Stranraer then 20 miles of local running around. In this trip the on board average fuel mpg was moving between 41-44 mpg. I did a fill to the brim at an Esso station and entered details into fuelly. It came up at 37.4 mpg. I knew the OBC would give an optimistic reading but disappointed it was so far out.

The return journey was 65 miles longer as we detoured via Keswick & Windermere (getting off the M6 at J40 and back on at J36 (30 miles) ) and decided to give the A49 a miss so carried on down the M6 onto M5 and of at J7. This added a further 35 miles to the journey but a far better trip than the A49 a few days earlier.

Two interesting things came out of this journey.

1) When I filled up with Esso for the return journey the on board computer was reading 42mpg and I decided not to reset it. During the return journey the on board computer never went above 41 and ranged between 41 - 38mpg.
I didn't do a brim fill when I got home but based on the first journey, the return journey mpg was a lot worse for no apparent reason that I can see.

2) I have no doubt in my mind that the car did NOT perform as well with the Esso fuel in it. Acceleration was not as responsive. LR Freelander 2 2014 metropolis SD4 auto in Loire Blue.

You wont get this if you are a certain age but was it that tiger in the tank ? Laughing

My wife did 130 miles return trip over the M62 yesterday, probably doing 60 mph most of the way as it was congested (nowt new there I guess Rolling Eyes ).

Got in the car for my next journey today and she had averaged over 43 MPG (using the on board stats) .

Are the early models really that different for MPG? Or is it an age thing with the right foot ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
