UK top speed may be raised to 80mph

Government have announced consultation period to raise UK limit to 80mph.
Strange move as most people hover around 80 anyway on a clear run, personally keep it just below 70 as the fuel mpg drops dramatically above 70mph/2000 rpm

speed to the story

From what I have read, the theory is, Set a higher limit where it is practical, police it properly (ie dont let people do 90 now just because the limit is 30) and maybe people will then take lower limits (where they are needed) more seriously.

Its a bit like the boy who cried wolf... set a more realistic speed limit and police it properly rather than set an unrealistic speed limit and let people bend the law because its unrealistic.

IMO I think it is the right thing to do. That and make more around town limits 20mph Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Where in Blighty can you drive on a public road that you can do 70mph let alone 80mph safely - it's all nose to tail bedlam. Giving Joe Public a driving licence was the first bad mistake UKGov made. Bring back the birch for misdemeanours and the stocks for parking offences. Frequent offenders should be transported to Zimbabwe, or Iran. That'll teach'em. Twisted Evil

I've been quite happy with the status quo; an official 70mph speed limit, with it being an open secret that the police don't take any interest beneath 80mph anyway. If the official speed limit is raised to 80mph and it's properly enforced, then the nett result will be: No change! Rolling Eyes

Make it 80mph but also make the penalties, say, over 85 that much greater.
At the end of the day, you can always still do 70 if you like.
