Wheel Insurance

Any one had any dealings with wheel insurance. From LR.
Cost £240 up to 10 claims in 3 years. Max £100 per claim. Cosmetic repair only . No replacement.
Sounds a bit iffy to me. What if it cost more than £100 to repair ?
When I get my SD4 with Diamond turned wheels tommorow. Am I better off not buying the insurance.

So they send the wheel away / take tyre off / repair wheel / fit & balance tyre / post back. All for £100 which is covered by insurance!
E'm not so sure. Neutral

I imagine it would only cover things like kerb damage for a max of £100. There are companies - franchises I believe, similar to chips away - who arrive in a van, take the wheel off, burnish off the scars and repaint, all for £50 to £70 per wheel. I can't recall the name at the mo but a friend of mine had a couple of wheels done on her Mercedes coupe. I was there at the time and he made a superb job. The wheels looked like new and he did take the tyres off.

There's a place near to me that is set up to do chip & scratch work that also do wheels. It's 60quid a wheel. So using that as a guide then you need to have more than 4 wheel repairs in three years to make the insurance worthwhile. I suppose it depends on how good you are at parallel parking Smile

Dealers have these small scratch and dent franchise guys come in to sort out minor stuff on 2nd hand stock all the time. My last car I bought on the day it had been traded in so I saw it non prepped. All 4 wheels needed a tidy up and their guy did a superb job. For a free country, it does seem pretty expensive these days.

I would speak with a wheel specialist company if diamond turned wheels can be repaired, i am not sure if they can be smart repaired myself.

Often diamond turned wheels have a clear lacquer on them, this can chip, lead to white worms, which is water getting under the lacquer

If you can take out wheel insurance then i would suggest shopping around, make sure it covers your sized wheel as there might be a max size covered and read the small print Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

NPINKS - sorry, a little off topic but . . . . the little white worms??? I had exactly what you describe on my previous 4WD alloys. I gifted the vehicle to a mate but I'd still love to know if there's any way of fixing the problem. Despite plenty of bush-bashing, there were very few scratches, but the "white worms" definitely devalued the vehicle. Do you know what can be done to rid them of white worm syndrome?

sand blasting the finish off , refinishing and reapplying as far as i am aware is the only remedy for it

Is water getting below the lacquer, so i presume if you caught the damage in time, (pre worm) you'll be able to seal it with some lacquer to prevent the ingress of water Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thank's all for your advise. Pick my SD4 GS up this pm. Apparently the wheel insurance now covers "Diamond" turned 19". If I do require a wheel to be refurbed & there are any issues with the claim. I'll hit them with the fact that they sold me a policy that is not suitable.
Everything should be "fit for purpose" even insurance.
Direct line arn't charging me any more for my insurance As long as I have told them about the factory fitted options / 19" wheel/DAB/Hetaed Screen/Half Leather. "Result there" Normally ouik up the policy. Told them I got a set of standard wheels also for winter - Must inform them when I swao e'm over. Youd think you could swap e'm over any time (maybe it's a good way for them the charge admin £15)

Catch ya L8TR

Instead of paying 240 for the insurance, I would keep the money and if really necessary I would source a wheel from ebay. At that price you can source even a (like) new set. Again, WHEN and IF necessary....
And supposing you are not an off-road adventurous... Laughing
