As you look under the bonnet, Remove the top engine cover, there are three 8mm stud bolts and one 10mm nut located under the air intake pipe to the right hand side.
In the engine and to the left hand side you will see a steel plate in front of you. Removing the plat will give you access to the diesel filter. Remember that if you remove the filter for a new one you will have to prime it or your car wont start. i use a one way priming bulb and some tube from the local boating supplies.
You can gain access to the pollen filter on removal of the glove box. hope this helps Thumbs Up

Sounds like you are looking for the cabin air filter. Its RH side behind instrument panel and located inside the heater assembly. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Ultimately as it has an electric fuel pump in the tank - it has got to self bleed with ignition cycling.

Sorry, you are wrong... Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the engine mounted lift pump.
The in-tank pump does not deliver fuel to the engine, and only delivers fuel through the two jet pumps to maintain fuel in the fuel delivery pot.

Here you'll find the procedure.
The special tool is a simple one way hand pump like seen in the picture.

But who knows, maybe he is right. In fact if you change the filter by yourself, you have nothing to loose and you can try to see if when energizing the in-tank pump, after the pot is full, maybe the fuel will be pushed up on the fuel lines till the fuel filter.

Please tell us how it was.

Ive just seviced my car and you dont need the special service tool and pay the highly inflated prices. Ive just renewed the diesel filter. I used a £12 one way fuel bulb that you can buy at any boating shop and a short length of tube. slide one end of the tube over the fuel line and connect to the bulb. Then connect another short length of tube to the other end of the bulb an push it in to the line in on the fuel line. Make sure you have the flow on the bulb in the right direction and pump several times until it begines to get hard.
You may leak a little diesel if you keep squeezing but just use a rag to catch any surplus. The simple disconnect and snap in the fuel line and wipe. Start engine as normal, it may turn over a little longer the first or second time after filter change but thats fine, Take her for a 3 or 4 mile run to purge any remaining air in the system. Job done. Remember when changing the fuel filter exercise extreme cleaniess Thumbs Up
