Holiday in UK

My dad and I are taking a holiday to the UK in August.

Nonstop from Midland, Texas to Houston, Texas with a two hour layover and then a nonstop from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to London Heathrow.

What I'd like to know, when I get to London, is there anywhere I can rent a Freelander 2? Or even a Freelander 1?

I'd like to hire a Freelander either way for my car rental.

Anyone know of where I can do this?

Thanks

-James

Also, what type of clothes will I need?

I assume I won't need a heavy jacket.

When I was in Amsterdam in March it wasn't as cold as I thought it would be so my heavy jacket wasn't really needed.

Try the usual car rental crowd online, most of them have what they term premuim vehicle hire which will include various Land Rovers. Most have sites at Heathrow.

Re weather, no you won't need a big jacket. Having visited Houston many a time on business I can say with absolute assurance you will find it cooler and a lot more comfortable!! Summer temps expect mid twenties C. T shirt and shorts.

Where are you going? If you sight seeing in London then you won't need a car, the tube covers most areas. The greedy barstewards running the city charge £8 to drive around it anyway.

Yeah I've seen on Top Gear when they talk about paying Ken Livingston or someone the Congestion Charge.

Plan on using public transportation when possible.

One thing is for sure, going to Solihull and a trip to Scotland. My family comes form Wales so gonna have to go there as well.

We want to ride the train to visit other places, so we'll only need a car for a few days.

Thanks!

BTW: Houston does have horrible humidity and heat. I live in the desert in Midland, Texas. We just have heat, no humidity ha ha ha

Ha ha ha, oops!

Also, can anyone recommend a good hotel near Solihull, Dover and Edinburgh?

Thanks!

Would anyone be interested in meeting up at Solihull to tour the Land Rover Plant with my dad and I?

lots of hotels on a45 main drag into solihull past airport, none brilliant but most functional. Stayed in many as used to work for company who installed machinery into land rover, jag etc.

Btw freelander built in halewood not solihull

Heritage centre at gaydon worth a visit as it's not too far away

That would be nice!

I am planning on buying a few more Freelander 2 and Discovery 3 and I suppose Discovery 4 badges for people in the USA. Some have seen my Freelander 2 badges and want them. I could make some money on that.

I knew that the Freelanders were built there, but from what I understand they don't have the driving school do they?

Is the Heritage Centre a museum of Land Rovers? What else can you tell me about that?

Thanks! Y'all are being very helpful on this.

www.tripadvisor.com is the best website to look at and get recommendations for hotels.

Hi Tex,
here are a couple of websites you may find useful:

The first for booking hotels, includes prices, availability and, most important, customer reviews http://www.booking.com/

The second for booking rail tickets in advance. The most expensive way to buy a rail ticket in Britain is to buy it at the Station, the cheapest is to book in advance and travel off peak hours. There are some special package deals for tourists http://www.raileasy.co.uk/

Britain is bloody expensive but have a good trip!

Thanks! I appreciate it!

I've been told it's quite expensive there but most of my trip is being paid for by my company so I've lucked out on that part.

Only thing I'll really have to pay for will be the fun stuff.

Which my biggest expense on that will probably be Solihull.

I talked to a company that hires Freelander 2s and they said that they do not provide insurance for the visit.

Can anyone suggest a good company to get insurance from and will they sell insurance for a ten day period?

You need to be fast booking a hotel in Edinburgh during August. It's festival month and accommodation is in short supply.

Always found http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk a good place to start with its honest reviews and photos.
