Isn't this how a diesel electric locomotive works?

Sort of.

On a locomotive the engine drives a generator the electricity from which is used by the traction motors, there are no traction batteries or direct drive from the engine so it is a much simpler solution.

Having said that, some of the latest designs of multiple unit have battery options and some have both diesel and electric power. 2019 Discovery Sport Landmark in Corris Grey

Yes I would... If I could afford it.

saw my first Jaguar I Pace in a local car park... absolutely stunning (as an on road only AWD) but as most of us only ever go on road only with maybe some light grass fields at the weekend then that will suffice.

My daughter’s iPace regularly ventures off road, not real rough stuff but across ploughed fields for sure, she doesn’t like it though because my SiL pinches it for said ventures!

I told her not to pick the 22” wheels, she didn't luckily Rolling with laughter

Like many on here I’ve been stumped as to a replacement for the Freelander, I’ve test driven many of the obvious alternatives but none of them really makes me say “Yes, this is going to be my next car”.

Three of the cars I’ve test driven are “self charging” hybrids, The Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, and Subaru Forester (the latest version on the new global platform available from November). The one I preferred was the Subaru Forester. It’s really very good and closest yet to the Freelander.

However, that is only available as a Hybrid and I’m not sure I want a Hybrid? Firstly any hybrid tends to be at least £3,000 more expensive to buy than the non hybrid models and my low annual mileage doesn’t justify the outlay. Secondly replacing the battery pack down the line is going to be expensive. And thirdly I just don’t like how the battery pack on any hybrid gets very hot during use, and takes up boot space so there is no full size spare wheel.

I’ve just been reading the What Car July issue that has a feature on Hybrid cars.

It’s brought home to me just how quickly Hybrids are set to take over from conventional Petrol and Diesel engines!

As an example all models of the Land Rover Discovery Sport from late this year will be Hybrid, with the sole exception of the base front wheel drive 150bhp diesel.

The magazine lists 39 hybrid cars available now, and a further 46 hybrid cars coming in the next year or two.

What I’m getting round to is that very soon it will be difficult not to buy a hybrid vehicle, whether the engine is petrol or diesel!

Again, like others on the forum I suppose I could just keep my existing Freelander for a few more years, it’s only done 50,000 miles. But by then there will be very few conventionally engined non hybrid vehicles available, so deciding sooner rather than later may make sense?

I do want a petrol engine rather than a Euro 6 diesel with all the potential issues. I don’t really want a hybrid. I’m not happy with the VW group. I’ve never really taken to the DS despite having driven several. And nothing jumps out at me as a real replacement for the Freelander.

Any suggestions?

Your comments are exactly what I am thinking at the moment. I can't really see anything that inspires me.
Incidentally a friend of mine works for a care home and they have half a dozen small Renault electric vans for visiting residential clients. Ideal for short local journeys but interestingly, the batteries are leased separately from the vehicles (which now weigh nearly 2 tonnes !) and tyre wear is noticeably higher than on the previous vehicles. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I'm pulling my hair out by the roots trying to find a suitable replacement.

While keeping the F2 and running it for a few more years makes sense, the gap in the cost to exchange grows wider every year. With my retirement on the horizon, I really want to have something on the drive that will do what the F2 does. I would be leaning towards a Subaru Forester, but I can’t see us changing ours in the next 5 years after investing the value of the car into the car.

I have no idea why the Shark Conservation and Research Foundation has anything to do with the DS issues, or whether switching to another Pilotless Target Aircraft will help much at all.......
