Rear diff

Has anybody in North America had issues with their rear diff? It seems like one of the most common faults with this vehicle. "Transmission Fault - Traction Reduced" came on the screen. Dealer did a 155$ "software upgrade" and that didn't fix it. They say they will proceed by elimination (changing part after part - the next step is the pump in the diff if I remember correctly) until they find a fix.

Dealer told me I can't damage the diff by driving around (is this true!?), so the car is with me until I find out if there are any ways to know what the fix is (instead of using the dealer's technique of replacing everything until it works). Has anyone had their diff fixed successfully (without the problem re-occurring). How much $ to expect?

At the moment, there is no whine coming from the rear diff.

Thanks for your help on this!

resurrecting this as our vehicles are getting older... (And I have no interest in moving to the new vehicles... just just seem so delicate)
I have noticed that whirring noise. I'm hoping changing the differential fluid will alleviate any future issues.
Should I look at anything else, from a minor maintenance perspective?

Thanks! Guy Pensa

Do you know the exact error code "dtc" (it is composed of 9 letters and numbers)?
Have you ever replaced the Haldex oil and filter?
Have you ever replaced the oil in the rear differential?
How many miles has your Freelander traveled?

Changing all diffs and haldex fluid this week. The Transmission fluid was changed and shifting does seem smoother. Guy Pensa

There is a user changeable filter in the Haldex. It’s a pain to get to but if blocked changing the fluid won’t make much difference.

There are actually two filters in the Haldex - one that is replaceable and comes in a kit and another "pump" filter which is cleanable and requires the pump to be removed to gain access.
Youtube videos show hows is done.

The positions of the Gen3 and Gen 4 filters are different and access is harder with the Gen 4 Haldex. Jules

I got a new rear Diff. in 2016, and am in the process of changing Diff and Haldex fluid/filter. Hoping to keep my diff going long term, but does anyone know of a shop in SOCAL (or the US) which will rebuild the Diff properly if it comes to that?

I'm using these intervals going forward, based on info here and other forums.

Haldex:
Fluid change (best I can with haldex in place) 20K
Remove/dissasemble/clean/filters 40K. May not bother with dissassembly, depending on how it looks the first time.

Rear Diff Fluid:
40K. Using AMSOIL Severe Gear synthetic, the OEM is dino juice, who the eff uses dino oil for anything but a fleet vehicle or beater anymore? May try M1 Delvac if there's anything weird with the AMSOIL.

Tranny Fluid:
50K

Transfer Case (PTU) Fluid: 50K. Sticking with OEM for now.

Also drilling/tapping drain holes for PTU and R. Diff. Installing magnetic plugs on Diff, PTU, and engine although the motor doesn't seem to be a problem on these cars, thank goodness.

I had a rear diff 'whirring' sound in my 2010.

Removing the rear diff and taking it apart was a big effort by my local shop - I was able to watch them do it.
The guy had a lot of experience doing it too and needed a bunch of special tools.

He swapped out the bearings and it's beautifully quiet again! Laughing

Good local shop in Toronto fixed it for a fraction of the price of anywhere else. If anyone needs details feel free to reach out.

For the HALDEX fluid, did you get the Volvo AOC fluid? I was reading online that it is the same as the Land Rover product and 1/2 the price. Still expensive -- cost me $75/litre from a local Volvo shop.

Rear Diff Fluid -- I ended up getting a litre from my local Land Rover dealership (needed it right away). It was WAY overpriced at $60/litre (yes, you read that right, Sixty bucks).... spec wise it looked the same as what you would find from Canadian Tire for $8. If I wasn't in such a rush, I would have procured a synthetic version fo the gear oil.

The Haldex fluid that Volvo sell is the same as that JLR sell, except cheaper. Jules

Thanks for confirming Jules.

For me, the Volvo AOC fluid was $75 / Litre vs $186 for 3x300ml tubes from JLR. Less than 1/2 the price. (all in CDN dollars)
