United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Santorini Black
Consultation

Can I please consult with the collective wisdom of the forum?
I have a 2012 XS with 32000 miles, a full service history and an extended warranty with Landrover since the end of the original manufacturers warranty.
It is all I want from a car and there is nothing in the market today to compare with the reliability, comfort, economy and practicality that it provides, certainly nothing in the JLR range.
I have concluded that I will run this car until it's natural demise and then buy an electric car. The current electric cars are not fully developed so it is too soon, in my opinion, to venture into this market.
My dilemma is whether to further extend the warranty at a cost of circa £600 pa. Originally I reasoned that an extended warranty would add to the value of the car. It now seems that the demise of diesel negates any added value in this regard.
Any views?

Put your £600 a year in a coffee jar. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I also have LR extended warranty ( only just renewed), presently at 89k. It gives me peace of mind, even if there is no claim (none for past 2 years) Not even thinking of resale value, which will plummet as the years go on. I feel the same as you, the car is ideal for me, does all I want, and presently know of no practical replacement (I also tow a caravan). Electric is not an option. Hybrid is possible but the costs are astronomical. Best to keep the FL2 until it’s demise or at least until we stop caravanning.

I've had to think about this as well. Some things I've considered:
How essential to me is the car - do I need to get it fixed urgently if something goes wrong?
What if something big like the gear box goes - can I afford it?
Cover abroad - I do two or three long trips abroad every year.
LR Assist - less important for an FL2 but I think essential for my DS.
Weighing the cost of Green Flag (very cheap through CSMA) against the extras of the LR Recovery service.
And if I take the warranty, do I pay extra for LR Assist?
Will I be keeping the car - if I trade in half way through the year I lose half the warranty, but if I sell privately I can offer a warranty with the sale.
Most importantly, peace of mind - I know that if something goes wrong it will be sorted. I won't have to worry about where I want the car recovered to and how long it will take to get it fixed.

Results of the thinking - first FL2 I took the warranty, had several claims, didn't lose when I traded in as I was paying monthly (chose this if you may trade the car in, as warranty is only transferable via a private sale); second FL2 I didn't bother, knowing I would probably trade it in, crossed fingers and the car was fine; DS, I've just taken out the extension, with LR Assist, because the car is just less reliable (but much nicer to drive - swings and roundabouts).

Does that help? Probably not. Sorry. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I toyed with the idea when mine got to 3 years old, then decided to do the above and stick it in the bank. So far, it has cost me one set of rear pads, one set of Conti's 4 years ago, and as of Friday, a new battery. Nothing else. I figure I'm nearly £3k better off as a result, so should something drastic like the rear diff/PTU fail, then I'm well in credit if I get Bell Engineering to replace it.

Mine on the other hand racked up about £4k worth of work in the first year I had it on extended warranty. Second extended warranty wasn't used. Didn't renew it after that. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

Having recently been on that voyage of discovery called "shall I replace the FL2 and if so what with ?" I decided to pay for the extended warranty (I know how expensive these cars are when they go wrong) and keep it for another year in the hope that LR bring out a petrol engined vehicle to my liking. I still think that electric cars are not quite there yet and that euro 6 diesels are the end of the road as far as I am concerned. (oil dilution, balance shaft wear etc) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE
