Problem with my back transmission after bearing change

Hope someone can help me.

I took my Freelander in to a Landrover garage here in Malta for a whining sound coming from the rear of my car which resulted in the bearing in the back transmission being worn and the sound had gone after being replaced.

However a new problem began with a clunking sound each time I turned the car left or right. Took it back to the garage and after a day they said it was ok and while it seemed ok at first, the sound started again by the evening and was as bad as ever. Took it back to the garage and they replaced the part (no idea what it was called) from another Freelander they were using for parts and told me it should be ok but the same thing happened and to be honest Im very frustrated and cant understand how these people arent able to fix this... Seems to me like an installation problem but I have no idea which is why Im now turning to you guys to help me. Excuse me for not being technical but I really dont understand in these things.

Thank you

(Oh yes, drove it a bit on the sand yesterday briefly and heard the noise on the back wheels again. Sounds like whenever the wheels are engaged, the noise comes each time)

Could be the Haldex grabbing. You could read up about it on here via the search button on how to test it or find a haldex specialist, the unit is fitted to many differing cars like Volvo 4x4. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks Bob but cant seem to find any solution... What I can't understand is that I had absolutely no problems with the Haldex until the bearings were changed in the rear transmission. And now it seems, no matter what they do, they cant fix it.

At the risk of saying something stupid, could it be the computer that needs re setting? IS it common for the Haldex to give problems after the bearings have been changed in the transmission?

Thing is I really dont want to be given lame excuses from the LR mechanic just because he doesnt have the expertise to install this properly.

Thank you

Can they by incident/lack of knowledge have filled the Haldex with gear oil and not Haldex fluid?

Find out the name of the parts they claim to have changed and try and check your diff and haldex fluid levels. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

My understanding is that one way to test whether the engagement of the haldex is the source of the problem is to simply unplug it. Your car is then front wheel drive only - the prop shaft will spin but wont connect through to the rear diff because the haldex clutch is now disabled.

Unplugging the haldex does it no harm but IIRC you get haldex failure warnings on the dash. But it can be simply reconnected.

Also removal of the haldex unit itself is straight forward and only requires basics skills and tools.

Loads of info in the downloadable workshop manual Jules

I believe they changed the bearings they claimed to have changed as the whining noise went completely and I trust these people as they are honest for sure and isnt my issue with them. Its more the lack of expertise from the Mechanic''s side that I question. and I dont even know where to start to check the fluid levels.

Well you need to ask want fluid thety put in the Haldex - its special stuff and very different from the EP oil that goes in the rear diff.

After that you're a bit stuck really if youve no access to another competent mechanic. However its never too late to learn about car maintenance.

The Haldex is known as the On-Demand coupling in the JLR manual
