Roof Console Ambient Lighting / Homelink “COMPLETED”

This project has simply morphed out of the desire/need to put a map reading courtesy light in for the rear passengers so when
using the Meridian Rear Screen Entertainment System each passenger can individually have a light source. So instead of just purchasing another map/courtesy light to replace the rear courtesy light only version I thought I’d just move the front one to the rear and purchase an Ambient Lighting replacement for the front which has been covered previously on the forum.

Whilst I’m doing this I thought I may as well go the full extent so I’m going to get the whole upper centre console done in
Gloss Black Laquer and the unused Sun Roof Switch location will become the garage door opener for 2 possible doors.

So I’ve sourced an “Ambient Lighting” interior light unit in this case from a 2016 Ford Kuga, called Escape elsewhere in Black. I think you can also source the same light from a Ford Fiesta ST 2013-2017, Focus ST, Ford Ranger, Ford Mondeo etc. Whichever version you get they’re all a direct fit for a Freelander 2.

This version has the ultrasonic detection module attached to it which is not needed as the Freelanders system is already mounted in the middle of the roof so I’ll be simply removing it from the back of the light.

In regards to the Garage Door Opening part I’ll be using the original JLR sunroof switch and changing the ideography on the switch from sunroof to garage door 1 & 2 idiography. I’ve found a company in the USA which produces switch graphic replacements for worn switch faces so I’m going to order a couple of replacements. I will update on the progress on this.

So while I’m still waiting on a few bits I started with running the power circuit for the sunroof/garage door opening switch illumination. As I don’t have a sunroof my roof harness is missing the wire from the harness and plug. The plug for the roof harness is one of the 3 located in the passenger footwell. Socket C22D is the grey socket and a brown wire needs to be added to “pinout 8” which is what I’ve done. The rest of the wiring that I need is present at the headliner.

I’ll update as I progress. MY15

Have test fitted the light which required minimal modifications, namely removal of the infrasonic module attached to top of light and modifying the power pickups, basically bent the spades slightly. Ambient lights also checked and ready for connection to illumination circuit. Going to make a small link harness from the original light twin spade connector to the new modified spade layout.

This is off to be “Grand Black Laquered” now and will be the last time you see it this shade and same for the sunroof switch which will become garage door 1 & 2, more on the button indica later. MY15

Roof console is back from being Black Laquered and I’ve also added a little bit of bling by adding some chrome piping. This matches the RSE wireless headphones transmitter and to keep it consistent I’ve had a frame for the rear seat light black
Laquered also. Will add this once I’ve fitted the front console and moved the front light to the rear position.

To make this whole project worthwhile I needed to find a remote that’s capable of communicating with not just as many brands of door openers but frequency variants and this is the one that fits the description perfectly.

From what I can determine this remote will give more compatibility that the original “Homelink” System learning rolling codes, fixed codes, Tricode, Billion, Security, Security+2.0, Legacy, Tritan etc. Pretty much everything.
Only negative was the size of the remote which made my task of soldering taps for external points for the 2 triggers and a LED rather challenging.
End result is now the circuit board is in its own little module box with external fixing points for the wire connectors.
As the LED is important in the sequence of door learning process I’ve come up with a discrete mounting utilising the defunct untrasonic sensors in the light mount. This saves making any unnecessary holes for a led and keeping the whole project rather discrete.

Link harness is also complete and ready to be mounted to the rear of the ceiling console.

Final piece of the puzzle is the change of indica to the sunroof switch which is on its way and I’ll cover once I’ve received. In the meantime I’ve removed the sunroof indica in preparation for the garage door 1 & 2 indica.

Before you put the light back in stick some acoustic foam around the sides on the ceiling liner. I have noticed improvement of less heat coming from above where insulation is. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Homelink Garage Door is now operational, been using it for about 2 weeks now and has been great.

Ambient lighting is also completed for the centre instrument switch pack and is better than expected giving a nice amber glow around the centre console. All the silver picking up this very affectively looks great contrasts perfectly with other lighting.

For the moment the Ambient Lighting is fixed and I'm currently working on changing this to the "configurable".

Honourable mention for the company responsible for the sunroof switch indica change to “Homelink” garage door 1 & 2.
The proprietor went to all lengths to help me and can highly recommend for switch rectification/rejuvenation if anyone need to repair a button.
They’re called EZ Button Refinishing.

In the meantime I’ve also been working on the other “Mood” lighting with now both rear door grab & opening handles illumination and front foot well “Mood” illumination additional to current footwell illumination which I’ll outline in a new thread.

Laughing aah no, it doesn't work like that.
The remote is fully programable but has to go through a learning process which involves you having access to the door you want to program and putting said door into programming mode.
Depending on the door will change the learning process slightly as different brands have different procedures to learn code/codes.
Exactly the same system as "Homelink" apart from as far as I can see, this has more coverage than "Homelink" brand. MY15
