Hi I’m looking at a freelancer 2. Was looking at disco 3 but financially I couldn’t afford it & running it. So started looking at freelander2. I’ve found a HSE auto in black 2009 ,at a garage which ticks all my boxes. I found on the disco 3 site that everyone was very keen to help a newbie!
So what things do I need to look for when buying a freelancer 2?? Disco 3 site has a drop down file which helped but couldn’t find one on here? Or am I being a computer ding?

Personally I would go for a later model, bought from a reliable garage, with a decent warranty. The best in my opinion is the SD4 auto.

Be wary as the FL2 is quite a complicated machine and needs to have been serviced properly in the past.
You will see on this site examples of people buying older FL2s which have been sold by the previous owners because they could not find (or afford) obscure faults. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

Main weak point on earlier cars seems to be the rear diff pinion bearing. Any noise on a test drive that increases with road speed should start alarm bells ringing in your head. I have read that some cars do suffer from tyre noise and that should not be confused with a failing diff bearing.

Agree fully about SD4's plus it has more HP than the TD. We have one of each. The 07 TD4 XS has just started to get a noisy diff and over the last 4 years has had the Turbo, EGR Valve, Cam position sensor, Power steering pipe, Glow plugs, One Injector, and return pipes and Inlet manifold replaced. All under warranty thankfully. The car has about 102K on it now.

Our 13 reg SD4 HSE has been fine for the last 2 1/2 years with just a couple off small issues. Passengers air vent came apart which i repaired and the auto selector LED's disappeared which was an easy fix with a dab ob super glue on the underside of the selector surround. I tow a 1500KG caravan with mine and it copes easily and on a motorway run has returned 27mpg whilst towing.

I also agree about the boot space being poor and when we go away the two dogs take that up so any bags have to go on the back seat, to combat this a little I had the dealer fit roof rails before I bought the car which helps the luggage issues.

As said, buy the latest car you can afford with service history and a good warranty, Some XS models are nearly as well equipped as the HSE so are also worth looking at  2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

is that the one at Croxdale ? Looks good, it will be due for its 10 years service (timing belt etc etc) which can cost around £750 (or more if you pick the wrong place).

From what you say an 09 reg one relates to your finances, there are many on here who will say avoid it and get a newer one, yeah if you win the lottery.

Got an 07 HSE myself had it 2 years runs very well, nothing but servicing required so far.

At the end of the day you can buy one only 3 years old and have problems.

I bought my car when it was only 4 years old (2011 TD4 GS) and it has had (under warranty): new transfer box, fuel sender re-wiring and a new throttle body. It also had to have a new clutch at less than 70k miles which was rather upsetting.

It's a bit of a lemon, but I still love it. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

I’ve had a new clutch at 50000 miles, and the pedal is still sticking ! It’s upsetting and I’ve had the car from new !

Thanks for all the help! Unfortunately the Durham one & thecroxdake ones went. Tried to get over to see one in Peterlee that went too then down to Northallerton but as I don’t have transport difficult getting. Luckily think I’ve found a good looking motor very near! 2007 (57) Xs! Even has the free2.com sticker on it!! Going to look at it Wednesday! Not the original spec I wanted but close. I can always upgrade things or add. Then sell on & move up to what I do want later. But at least I’ll finally have one!!!!

If you spot a good one try offering a small returnable deposit to hold the car for you to see.

I still think that in the long run you will get better value with a SD4, preferably post 2012 (with the Evoque inspired upgrades) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Yer there is. But have trouble getting to them as wife has the car so I’m trapped in a village. Buses aren’t great.
