Cash versus Cards

A new one at the supermarket today. An elderly couple (who are probably younger than me) were in front of me at the checkout. After the surprise of finding out that the supermarket had to be paid she eventually found her handbag and produced a credit/debit card and said that she wouldn't be a minute as she had to pop over the way to get some money from the cash machine at the bank.

He said why not use the cash that she already had.

She did not want to use that cash for some unknown reason.

There was some "discussion" between him and her, but she still went to the bank.

Thankfully for the other customers, he then produced a credit/debit card and paid the bill.

WHY, WHY WHY? can any one suggest any reason or logic for this?

On a slightly different subject - Store Gift Cards. Why give them? If you do you restrict the recipient to spending it in that one store only (assuming they will still honour it). If you want to give someone a cash value present why not give them "Bank of England gift cards" which are made in values of £5, £10, £20 and £50? Some newer ones are made in plastic now but others are still printed on paper and they can be spent in any shop in the UK and even put in the bank as savings.

Agree - Ive never understood the concept of Gift Vouchers. Some people seem to think its more of a present if you give vouchers rather than cash - this I find very odd.

Whilst on the subject - cheques - what a PITA they are nowadays.
Until recently I was treasurer for a SCUBA diving club for about 10 years- I refused cheques - cash or ebanking.

Also the DVLA accepts on-line payment but will only send refunds as a cheque (another PITA) - why cant they ebank it ? Jules

Jimboland. Because the money she had was in her head already spent.

My mam does it all the time Whistle If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

A 'friend' of mine bought some cash in a dodgy pub, very cheaply I assume, anyway the local petrol station took a dislike to fake money and reported him.
After this he wisely hid the rest of the money under his bed, because the police would never think of looking there would they.... yes they did.

Later he took to growing cannabis in his flat above an Indian restaurant. The restaurant kitchen caught fire, so fire brigade insisted on checking the flat to make sure the fire wasnt spreading under his floor boards, they reported the plants to the same police that looked under his bed.

Garage on way in to work at 6am today - bloke at front paid for fuel by card; forgot to pay for his smarties! No cash and garage wouldn’t accept card for less than a quid. Resolved by cancelling previous transaction and putting it all through again. Pita. No wonder he looked Censored embarrassed when he walked away.
I’d have just left the smarties behind

I would have paid for the Smarties for him, just to get the queue moving again.

I did some computer work for a small company and lots of customers bought gift tokens for birthdays and xmas presents etc which had to be used within a year. One day I happened to have a look at the database which kept track of these and found that on average fewer than 40% were ever redeemed. Quite a nice little earner and as far as the purchaser is concerned they have given the gift so no longer interested. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
