Richard,

Don't give up

If I were in your position I would do two things

1. check all of the high current connections between the battery and starter and back again. In the link that I posted above I documented the voltage drops while cranking the starter (let me know if you need more details on what to do)

2. Take your time starting your Rover

For #2 here is what I posted on another message board

Here is my recommendation of what I would do if I were in your position

* open door and enter vehicle

* count to three

* dock the key

* count to three

* step on the brake and hold it down

* count to three

* press the start button (engine starts)

* select gear and release the brake

The pauses between steps are important the various computers are doing things and they need time

Thanks Sid and Paul,

Tonight I will do as you both suggest, a systematic checking of all the leads and earths in the starter circuit. I also have access to a battery load tester and will run that test tonight as well-just in case I have a cell giving trouble in the battery.

I didn’t see Sid’s post until after my post

My solution 1 is the same as what Sid wrote

Note: the best way to measure the contact resistance is by measuring the voltage drop while the engine is cranking and lots of current is flowing.


Sid,

My battery may look like the original Land Rover battery but I can assure you that it’s not.

That’s my third battery in 10 years.

I only seem to get about 4 years per battery.

The electronics on my LR2 are not happy when the battery gets old.

I no longer wait for my battery to die instead I replace it at the first sign of trouble

My Land Rover has only left my stranded twice in 10 years

The first time was a mile from home (the original battery died)

The second time was in front of my house.

The engine was slow to start, so I charged the battery but I didn’t remove the cables from the battery and one of the modules latched up due to the low voltage during starting. One day later the battery was completely flat due to the current draw.

Installed a new battery and all is well
