Looking art purchasing a portable lithium jump starter pack, anyone use/recommend one of these on their LR?

I haven't used one on a LR, however I have a DBPOWER one that I used several times on my 3.0 Jaguar and it's great. I have to admit to being a bit sceptical when I first brought it as to whether something that small would provide enough power but I used it several times without the need to recharge it. I would not be without it now.

On other reviews I have read that it is important to get one with sufficient capacity. The FL2 needs quite a lot of poke to turn engine over, and some of the cheaper lithium starting batteries do not have enough power. I have an old fashioned lead acid version which I keep plugged in to my garage. Very handy, but I think my neighbours have used it more than me. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I noticed that my mechanic have them on each on the mechanics tool stations. They were not the small models which are flogged off everywhere.

I have no idea of the brand but probably best to avoid the budget models. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I had to buy one from Hellfrauds a few years back, its their own brand power pack, compressor,light and aux charger all in one unit. Its proved very good over the years.

I needed to jump start a 2.2 petrol Zafira on a daily basis and the power pack was invaluable. Im not sure its holding its charge very well now though but then it is about 6 years old and has been used to power cool boxes, charge phones, jump start cars, pump tyres etc etc etc.

Unless its for use on something more basic I would not be flashing these motors using a starter pack on a regular basis. Shocked

How old is the car battery. I change mine every 4 years. In over 3 decades I have never had a dead battery. Jumper leads live in the car & I have jump started dozens of other cars, even more worrying a number in outback Australia!

Probably more cost effective to change the car battery more frequently. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi, yep for a freelander 2 that I am getting delivered this week. Just want the insurance of a portable power pack for jump starting if ever needed. Reading reviews on amazon lots of people have used the DBpower 1200 to jump start diesel engines of various sizes.

The problem is, like many modern computers on wheels (aka cars), there are way too many electrical components that are surprisingly sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

The FL2 is notorious for being very sensitive to low voltage, and by low I mean 11.8v (don't quote me on that figure) and strange things start to happen !! The battery monitoring system (BMS) kicks in and tries to protect other components.

so by jump starting a FL2 you run the risk of spiking some components and causing all sorts of problems. That's not to say it should never be jump started, but its not something you want to do on a regular basis. You would be better investing in a new battery if you don't know how old the existing one is.

Page 169 - 170 of the 2013 Freelander manual has jump starting procedure. Page 170 has starting aid procedure.

Get a new battery every 4 years. Amortised over 4 years a new car battery is about the least costly thing for maintaining a car.

Get jumper leads with a minimum 1/0 awg 53mm2 or 9.53mm (0.37 inch) actual wire diameter, not the insulation diameter. & Utilux H811 2mm copper bronze 200 amp continuous current clamps.

300 amps over 6 metres (3 metres each way) 53mm2 has a 4.3% voltage loss. The typical off the shelf jumper lead set with 4 gauge wire has a 11% voltage loss. A lot of cheap jumper leads use 6 awg & their voltage loss is 17%.

I have never seen the actual wire size on jumper leads. They might say 700 amps but this is meaningless. They probably have a 40 - 50% voltage drop & will start smoking. I have seen this once outside my home. They couldn't start the car, so I lent them my welding cable set, instant start & no toxic smoke in the air & melted plastic on people's feet!

My petrol engine needs 238 amps to start, diesel engine, let's say up to roughly 300 amps. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
