Opinions on this rear dashcam installation

I have zero technical or mechanical knowledge so I seek your opinions please. I’ve had a rear facing dashcam installed at Halfords today and it works fine.

However, once at home I’ve noticed where they have installed the cable and as you can see from the photos, they have lifted a small section of the rubber seal up. So, when it rains, water will get under that gap.

In your opinions, is this not an issue at all and the water will simply drain away, or is there now a risk of water ingress into the roof lining at the rear of the car?

Thanks in advance

Poor way of doing it I would say as even if the seal face sealed to the tailgate face in the short term (its now bloated) water could / will track down the cable to it lowest point. Not sure where the cable fully runs behind the seal and if that then enters your car.

My front facing camera picks up power off the cig lighter, goes under the drivers seat and routes around the door seal and frame. But its the inner fitting face within the car and in theory no water can get that far. It also still sits very flush to its mating surfaces.

Really that's a bit lazy, the cable should go into the hatch then pick up the cable loom to the front of the car, it's done that way on the cheap, less time. Leak wise it should be OK but where does it go from the seal? if the cable runs down the water also could follow it and drip where you can't see my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Thanks for the input. The wire seems to head off in the direction of the drivers side of the car but I am not sure of its precise route as they installed it while I went off for coffee. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I don't understand why they put into the seal at all.
My rear camera cable runs around inside the edge of the headlining and stays inside the car to the rear window.
That is over the hatch seal. It seemed a perfectly natural path to take, and does not trap the cable anywhere in any seals.

Recover the cable and put outside the seal. (inside the car) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

My cable follows a similar route under the passenger seat, but I hid mine under edge of the door kiick plate, then under the carpet near the join (which is about halfway along the seat bottom rail). It gets it all out of sight. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I’ve just realised that there are holes along the rubber seal across the top there anyway. So in a period of torrential rain, some water is bound to end up behind the seal anyway. I can only presume the water meanders off somewhere and drains away but I’d still like to know where the cable goes. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Wouldn't the holes in the seal be for letting air out when the seal is compressed ?

It doesn't look like there are any other choices in getting from the rear screen to the interior of the car without going via the seal. On my FL2 I was able to go via some existing cable shrouds that led directly to the headlining.

I must admit I was fascinated by Bob's photo. I have learnt a lot by reading this thread.

PS As regards the main (but less interesting) subject, I still cannot see why it is worth routing the camera cable through the seal as it is only a short distance from headlining to camera at top of rear window. There will be a loop in the cable anyway as you have to allow for the hatch to open. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I new some smart ass would comment Laughing Sandals just thrown on to nip out to get the picture rather than stand in all that Northern muck ( also Swallows in and out of front porch still),

As for others comment on routing, yes it could be hidden more but left like that so I can peel if all out in seconds. In Austria 🇦🇹 As an example its a 9,000 Euro fine for having a camera on a 🚘 FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Here's how I've done mine. Camera not fitted as I'm waiting for the tailgate window to be replaced.Anyway, it feeds behind the trim at the top, through the rubber grommet, across to the n/s and down behind the d-pillar and in to the spare wheel well and in to the fuse box. Took around 5 minutes to do. No chance of snagging.

Thing is the Doc has a VW Polo, so though the theory is the same the tailgate and trim will be different but the routes to the front will be similar to the FL2 my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Back at Halfords now to have it rectified. The guy has come up with a different route for the cable that won’t interfere with the seal. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
