Easier to just buy a 2nd hand manifold without the swirl flaps.

True, a later manifold without swirl flaps would be slightly easier.

However for 10 minutes extra work with a pair of pliers I'll keep the £60-£80 in my pocket.

Hi all. small update on swirl flap removal.

Decided to finally seal the vacuum line to the swirl flap actuator.

Removed actuator by twisting out and very carefully prised open by releasing the small clips.

On opening I discovered why the actuator had not been working. Small splits in the diaphragm all around the seal area. (see photo). No surprise it wasn't working. My guess would be that there are quite a few older cars with the same issue and flaps are just not working.

Might be why some cars have problems and others don't. Finally sealed with small self tapper and some silicone gasket sealant. At least vacuum pump wont be sucking in fresh air any more.

Cheer, JGH99.

I disabled the swirl flaps on my MY08 TD4 112kW with DPF by disconnecting the connector of the vacuum valve.

No problems so far since 5000 km...

Since i have a better scanner now (Foxwell NT520), I recognised that the ECU throws a "P2008 Intake manifold runner control circuit/open (bank 1)".

Do you think, disabling or removing the swirl flaps will influence the DPF regeneration? Unfortunately the NT520 shows no information of "soot charge" or "DPF regeneration period".!?

Don't think so, I've removed my swirl flaps about 50.000 km ago and no problems with the DPF

Hi all, quick update on swirl flap removal.

12 months on and sailed through MOT on emissions (unfortunately required a new offside front drop link on an advisory).

Hi, had my 2007 auto go into limp home when accerlating up hill with the caravan on the back and it wouldn't clear with an on off reset. Took car to thr garage and they said they have found this in the throttle body.

They are going to take the manifold off tomorrow and try and find the flaps, but is it possible for the brass shaft to break off inside and end up in the throttle body?

Hi, I have seen other posts where pieces of the brass rod have been found in the pipe below the throttle body. If I remember correctly, there was no noticeable damage done to the engine. Fingers crossed for yours.

Thanks JGH99, I wasn't sure if it had been carelessly left thier by another garage, but it seems it is possible. The car drove to garage and didn't sound rough, just in limp home, as you say fingers crossed. They think the fault code was generated because the rod was stopping the throttle body opening fully therefore giving dodgy readings. Can you remove all the flaps and bung up the holes in the end of the manifold? I have read where people have taken the flaps out but put the shaft back in to block the holes, obviously my shaft is broken?

Hi, I removed my flaps and shaft. I just left the small actuator arm clipped in. Has never leaked since. I also plugged up the vacuum line to stop arm moving. No problems since and passed MOT no problems. Freelander 2 GS Stornoway Grey

Swirl Flaps Removed

Hi everyone.

Having read all your posts, I decided to remove my Swirl Flaps - I purchase a second hand unit (06-10), removed rod and flaps and blanked the control rod hole. My car is a 2008 XS - The work took about 3 hours with a cup of tea - I also blanked the actuator off at source - The car preforms perfectly, with a little more power down low and an average mpg of 33 - The car passed the MOT with flying colours - I now feel far happier that the possible disaster has been averted.

The Swirl Flaps on the original manifold were not damaged but the shaft at the opposite end to the actuator could move approximately .25 fore and aft - I have modified the original manifold - If anyone is interested £50.00 + postage !!

Kind regards.
Gordon.

Did you sell it via this thread/site or somewhere else?. Just wondered as I’ve got my original manifold in the garage I could do with selling.
