First time poster, long time lurker - 2010 Freelander 2 woes

Hi all - had my FL2 since Jan, great run-around, but got a few issues which I think are common (having read various posts), wanted to double check in with this community.

Symptoms -

Rumbling/vibration emanating from the rear, at low speeds only, primarily when turning. At higher speeds, when putting the power down, a low pitched creak/squeek comes from the same general rear area.

History -

Not long after purchasing (Jan this year), the 'Transmission Fault; traction reduced' message started popping up, and special programs were not selectable. Took it back to the garage i purchased from, they couldn't find anything wrong (not specialists), so i replaced the battery, and voila the issue went away.

About two months back, got both rear tyres replaced and had a realignment at the same time (Kwik Fit) - front tyres unchanged. Didn't notice any immediate issues thereafter, but the problems definitely arose after the fitting. But causation/correlation etc...

Took it to my local Land Rover dealer earlier this week, and the report stated 'extreme vibration, suspected worn Haldex unit' and quoted me 2.5k for parts to replace.

I guess the term 'suspected' in the LR report has me slightly concerned, as i'm not convinced that's definitely the issue. Could this be tyre mismatch/alignment? Or something else?

have you tried swapping the front tyres to the back and seeing if the symptoms persist ?

and have the balance and tracking all checked again by somewhere other than kwik cr@p as they about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

also contact Austin at Bell Engineering via this forum as he is the transmission guru

good luck with it Thumbs Up

It could be down to the tyres or badly fitted tires, I have had a new tire fitted in the fast it didnt feel right and turned to be slightly out of shape with a flat spot on it, What make tires did you get fitted ?

My 09 HSE has AT tires fitted and I was getting a noise at the rear swaped them to the front and now the noise is at the front I know there worn and will need replacing come winter so for now I will live with it unless I sell it first,

It could be the Haldex but that sometimes throws up terain responce faults up on the dash also or it could be the diff bearing on its way out which is common HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Thanks both.

i'll try swapping them this weekend. LR did a full health check which included a tracking adjustment, but will double check that as well. Shouldn't have gone Kwik cr@p i know :-/ thanks for the recommendation, will drop Austin a line.

Also, is there any way to temporarily 'turn off' or disconnect the Haldex, to see if the problem persists?

From the wiring diagram it looks as if the power is supplied via fuse FB6 15A in the ccu. that is in front of the glove box.
Good luck.

I agree with everything RogB said. Tyres; alignment, Austen at Bell Engineering. Re the fuse, it is 15amp, it can be found in the boot fuse box.

I would also be slightly wary of LR Health checks... on my last one they noticed the coolant was only at -5 deg when it should have been -15 deg, but apparently failed to notice the misaligned headlights (which they had just refitted) and perished CV boots underneath which failed MOT a month later. Shocked

On reading some of these 'recent buyer' posts, with strange or expensive problems, I am wondering if it is wise to buy a modern second hand car without a very good warranty.

I think quite a few owners are selling their cars to avoid inconvenience and/or expense. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

just to close out this thread my end, ended up replacing the Haldex as suspected, which appears to have solved the problem. There is a slight whining to the rear still, but nowhere near as bad as previously - they reckon that might be a bearing on the way out, so one to watch. They also gave me a decent price on parts and fitting (at least looking at other forums/cost quotes). So we'll see how it goes..

A guy in the trade once told me that you should avoid buying a car that is just out of warranty unless it's from a franchised dealer. The logic being that if there were known problems (picked up from warranty claims) then the dealer network wouldn't want it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Many cars are now leased so dealers do not touch them in the final 3 to 4 year selling process as they are owned by the leasing company and most will go to auction IMO. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
