Erratic fuel gauge on recently bought car

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if anyone could offer advice?

We bought a 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE last week from a car showroom in Coventry. We have noticed that even with a full tank of fuel, the gauge will drop right down to empty and then slowly climb back up to full again.

From reading some of the helpful threads on here, I can see that many have been affected by the same issue and the fix seems to be to re solder the fuel level sender connection pins as advised in Land Rover technical bulletin ltb00566v6.

I've gone back to the garage that I bought it from and advised that this is happening and have pointed them in the direction of the technical bulletin. Their initial response was to bring the car back to them for them to fix, but later on they suggested that I have it repaired at a local garage and they will swallow the cost. The reason being I am a 2 hour round trip away from them.

My concern is, as they haven't actually diagnosed the problem themselves, if the fix in the technical bulletin doesn't resolve it then they will say it's my fault and won't continue to fix the problem.

I'm wondering if I should insist that the problem is diagnosed and rectified by them so that it is dealt with in the correct manor. The only problem being the distance away from them Sad

I guess really, I'm looking for someone to advise on the likelihood of the problem going away after completing the works outlined in the LR technical bulletin.

Thanks very much,
Jim

Hi Jim, sounds like the garage are accepting their responsibility which is a good start. Do you have their offer of having a fix carried out local to you in writing? If so, why not just take it to your local Land Rover dealer and have it fixed by them and then claim the cost back through the supplying garage.

Hi DenniJ,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I don't have their offer in writing as it was over a phone call, but I do have their initial message which suggested that I take the car to them.

They did suggest getting it repaired by a "local independent" garage, so I don't think they will agree to me taking it to a Land Rover main dealer. In any event, for Land Rover to diagnose the fault, it's going to cost me £140 an hour plus VAT.

I'm thinking I might call a few local garages and ask if they can diagnose.

What about Richards Land Rover Specialists in Kettering, is that close enough for you?
