Thanks for that. I do my own servicing so guess that rules the dealer out. I'll give them a call tomorrow, you never know, they might surprise me!!

Thanks again. MY11 SD4 HSE.

I've only had my63 plate for about a month now and we noticed the jolt albeit not that abrupt (Significant Other noticed it more as a passenger than I did as the driver) and I was putting it down to a change in driving style and such. I seemed to have overcome it by slipping the car into neutral when stopped. This was a bit of an issue though when stopped on a hill.
Now I see this is a genuine issue I've contacted the Indy garage I found to service the car and they reckon the software can be downloaded for £48, which seemed a bargain for leaving the car with them for 3 hours.
I'm assuming this software update will remedy the problem?
I bought the car from. Mazda main dealer with a 12 month warranty, although unlikely this would cover the cost? Will have to check.

it does sound just like it. I first noticed it towing the caravan through a town in France and had been held at the lights for a while, took my foot off the brake and there was a big jolt! After that I selected N when stopped, especially on a slight incline. £48 sound very reasonable i would say. MY 2013 SD GS Auto

Sorry for the bad translation, but you've got the idea...
Didn't find the English LTB so the post is of a Google's Russian-English translation...

.... the box does not shift into 'auto neutral' if in drive and being held on the brakes. This is evident as when I pop it forward into N, I can hear the engine 'unload', and when putting back into D I can hear it load up again.

After moving/rolling, you need to be stationary, in "D", with the foot on the brake for about 10 seconds and only then the box will autoselect "N".

I was just wondering, my13 sd4 doesn’t seem to ever auto shift to N when stationary.
I’ve never had any jolting, but wondering if when it auto shifts to N, does it show this on the dashboard somewhere?

No it doesn't.

I'm not mechanic, but I seem to rembeber all that happens is the gearbox stays in drive, but somehow disconnects via some techy gizmo thingy, so when you have to set off its in gear to ready to go.

I'm sure someone will come along soon and make a proper post that makes sense soon, Laughing Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

There is also the matter of the delay in the brakes releasing when held on an incline Question

That makes sense, if it does that, it doesn't feel any different as you can feel the car pulling, especially if you leave it in D and put the E-brake on (not sure if your meant to do that, everyone seems to though who i've met? )
I have opted for, If i know ill be stationary for just a few seconds, ill leave it in D with brakes on, if i think its longer ill shift to N and put the E-brake on to give people behind a rest from my glaring brake lights.

Sorry just realised have slightly changed the topic of the original post with my question Sad

I think it does remain in Drive but the torque convertor acts as a slipping clutch at low revs. I did read somewhere that some autoboxes will go into Neutral after a short time like this but not sure if that's the case with the FL2 6 speed auto. Anyone any ideas? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Software updated yesterday, I'll just have to wait and see if it works! had a brand new Disco sport for the day while they did it. I find the FL2 much more comfortable, didn't like the seats at all. Nice and quiet, and the 8 speed auto seemed good. Steering heavy though. I didn't like the black interior roof! So opened it up to the glass one, much better. I'll be keeping the FL2 for a while yet. MY 2013 SD GS Auto

Yet to get to the garage - waiting on a friend to act as my lift home as last time I was given an Astra as a courtesy car, fine at the time but subsequently laid me up for a week with a bad back Sad

I think this our auto box. Note the article says that it only works once engine is at full working temperature.

When the vehicle is stopped in “D”, the transmission enters a
neutral condition by releasing the clutch. By reducing the
actuation pressure, the load on the engine is lightened, fuel
economy is enhanced, and idling vibration is reduced.
When the vehicle stops on an upslope during Neutral control,
creep force is not generated. In this case, B1 allows safe
vehicle start by preventing it from moving down the slope.
This is called "hill hold".

If I am right, the above site seems to contain some useful info.

And although I find this bit puzzling and I have had this self learning mode quoted to me twice by LR dealer to explain my transmission queries.

Features – Self Learning Control
Since TCM performs shift control learning and
garage shift control learning, it provides smooth
clutch engagement during shifting gears and
smooth and delicate shifting while driving.

64 plate SD4 (autobox obviously).

I dont get any jolting.
When stopping for a few mins only , eg at red lights etc I have been in the habit of putting the electric hand brake on and leaving it in D. And then just driving off with the EHB auto-releasing.

Recently I was told its better to put the EHB on and knock the box into N as this will reduce autobox clutch wear. I have no idea if this is true or not. But it does mean you have to press the brake peddle to put in back into D before moving over to the accelerator, which seems a lot of unnecessary work Laughing Jules

Just checked my manual, it says :

Do not allow the vehicle to remain stationary for any length of time, with a gear selected and the engine running. Always select P or neutral (N) if the engine is to idle for a prolonged period.

How long is a prolonged period, 15sec , 5 mins ??

Is this advice about safety or gearbox wear reduction ? Jules

I usually take it out after a minute or so like waiting at lights or a level crossing. Some years ago I was in my company car (auto) stuck in a long line of traffic, I must have dozed off as I suddenly woke up with a jolt as I had gently run into the back of the car in front . It was a Disco with a tow bar on the back so no damage to him but I had a cracked number plate with a hole in it. Very embarrassing at the time and I told my transport manager at work that someone must have done it in a car park. Whistle 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
