Convincing myself my Aux belt tensioner has failed.

Anyone else had this problem ever and views of doing the repair ?

First job is getting one at short notice of course. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Replaced my tensioner and belt at the same time as I did my timing belt earlier this year. It was straightforward enough to do with reasonable access through the inner wing once the plastic splash guard is removed. Its held in place by a single bolt and tensions automatically once you remove the locking pin after fitting. It1s a pretty standard type of tensioner that is fitted to lots of different engines and is not prone to failure as far as I am aware. Hope you have a garage to do the work as it`s a bit on the chilly side at the moment to be kneeling on the ground with your head stuck in a wheelarch!

My auxiliary belt slips when its raining or gets splashed with water would a failing tensioner cause this as its only covered 41,000 miles the belt looks quite new as the part numbers are still visible.

Under normal circumstances the inner wing splash guards and undertray should keep water away from the belts and the bottom of the engine. Are they all in good condition and fitted properly? If they are then unless you are deep wading or driving too fast through deep puddles the belts should never get wet enough to slip. Thumbs Up

My auxiliary belt seams to only start to slip when its raining when the engine is cold. Driving home from work at 8:00 pm tonight I pulled in to pass a car in a rural lane to hear a squeak then it starting to shriek with the throttle which stopped when moving again.

Years ago belts often squealed and if tension checked out OK a quick flash while running with WD40 cleared it.

As you cannot set the tension if the tensioner is failing you will need to change it but a WD40 flash may just be the quick fix. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

WD40 won’t do anything other than quieten the noise - it will still slip. In work, if I have a squeaky belt, I just give it a squirt of belt grip. Off the top of my head, I can’t remember the make of it but it’s this type of prodict.

Belt dressing (or anything else for that matter) is not recommended on modern serpentine belts.

Booked the freelander in next Tuesday for Eden to look at the slipping belt and a passenger door shutting issue it has they say its covered by the warranty.
The only problem since i booked it in it hasn't slipped. Whistle just a slight noise on full lock.
Rolling Eyes Before anyone asks i purchased my freelander 2 from Eden vauxhall who like many other manufactures seam to sell all rival makes of vehicles for a bargain price of £16000 with only 41k miles.
My freelander is the Xs but with heated front screen , heated seats with memory function , auto dipping reverse mirrors were these standard xs equipment or optional extras. Thumbs Up

I think you will find the heated windscreen and memory seats (therefore dipping mirrors) are extras.

Not sure of your model year but below is a link to sales brochures on another forum.
