Hi.

I have a MY early 10 and I want to add roof rails, and bars.

What rail do I order? and how do I fit it? Do I need to do much if any drilling or are there plastic covers that just need removing? I don't really know where to start.

I installed the rails myself. You need a 21mm socket, you can use it after for the wheel nuts. It is not worth bugg_ring up the roof, just buy the right size socket! You can lift up the front plastic strip on the car & see the bolt which needs to be removed.

You will need to drill through this strip later, from memory 24mm diameter, line it up but don't drill it on the car.

The 2 pairs of rear holes have a plastic plug (see photo), drill a pair holes, you don't need to drill through, just enough to turn out with a pair of pointy nosed pliers. Drill using a pin vice (by hand) so you don't go through & damage the car.

It is easier to put the cross brace on first with the allen bolts & then put the entire setup on the roof. Don't fully tighten the cross brace, about 2 to 3 full turns from tight at both ends. It is a real pain trying to install the cross brace with the rails already on. I learnt the hard way, so took the rails off to put the cross brace on first. First tight. Then not tight!

Put 6 old towels on the car roof to where the roof rack is fastened, so you don't damage the roof trying to locate the rails, once one side is in position carefully remove towels & then lightly bolt in place. Repeat the other side.

I etched and painted the bare metal under the front bolts to be removed & let it dry for 24 hours.

You need some auto motive acrylic sealer, unfortunately I could only get it in a 310ml cartridge! Sikaflex-227

5mm allen key. Think thats it..... a 2 step stepladder/stool to see what you are doing.

Bath towels on the car roof are your friend. For positioning rails & under the allen bolts while tightening up the cross brace.

After travelling on Australian corrugated roads I have a rattle on the front left bracket. It appears that the extrusion is a bit loose over the cast bracket. So a bit of packing around the casting before you put it in the extrusion maybe needed.

The rear black plastic covers are a poor fit & sometimes come off, replacements are not cheap. I put a bit of black cloth tape on just in case. You don't really notice it under normal conditions.

I had OEM LR rails and after 5 years not a blemish

Other cheaper ones can suffer paint peel a little faster Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

If I just want bars, not needing the rails all the time, does anyone recommend something like the Thule 754 footpack and appropriate fitting kit and bars?

I have the Prorack Whispbars equivalent. Very quiet when just the bars fitted. Easy to fit, similar to the Thule, clamping on the door apertures.
I think my version of the Prorack has now been discontinued in favour of a roof gutter strip mount. Won't fit sunroof models.

Yup that's what I use with the Thule Aero bars - not the most elegant solution but more than up to the job
