Diff Repair

Well after getting no were with my local Land Rover Dealership ( Hunter's in Chester ) about what Suspected was rear diff Bearing whine and them constantly trying to blame the General Grabber AT tiers I have on the car ( keeping in mind it would be a warranty claim with Inchecape so no real cost to them )I finally gave up and had it looked at by my local Land Rover and 4x4 specialist whilst they were doing a service.

The car has done 68,500 miles for reference I know they all seem to fail at different millage's

As suspected they drove it instantly and said Diff bearing but they wanted to put it up on the lift and attach there sound monitoring gear and take it out for a drive again so i left them the car to do the service and there testing, got a phone call later that afternoon telling me service was done and the diff bearing was knackered, I told them I had an extended warranty with Inchecape so they rang them asked if they would authorize the repair which they said yes but I would have to pay £100 towards the labor cost which I agreed to.

So the car went in Thursday morning and I got it back 4pm Friday with a Service and a rebuilt rear diff now that's what I call good service the car is now quiet and a joy to drive again.

The service was £200 which included two new rear Disks and pads, the total price of the Diff rebuild and labor was £638, so in total I have a happy car again that's cost me £300, I think that's pretty damn good. HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Can't understand why you had to pay anything towards the repair as it's on extended warranty. I have had a number of things done including rear diff and transfer box and never had to pay anything. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

So is it not a LandRover extended warranty?

When I bought it 4 yrs ago it came with a 2yr Landrover Warranty, when it expired I was contacted by Inchcape and asked if I wanted to extend it, Which I did as like most on here thought the dreaded Diff would bite them at some point, As for why I had to contribute according to inchcape when asked was because of Labour they recon that to replace the Pinion Bearing is 3.8 Hrs labour and the garage said it would take longer hence I had to pay towards labour, I am an engineer and have stripped and rebuilt many gear boxes in work and after speaking to Inchcape I even said that the Times they use for doing that kind of job is completly wrong, they said they work to the guidelines there given but at the end of the day it got fixed and the warranty has paid for its self and more. So I am not really complaining, I was in to minds to trade it in for something else but couldnt really find anything as good with out getting into stupid money, it worked out the cheaper better option and hopefully I will keep her another 2-3 years but next year i will be looking at a cam belt change as she will be 9yrs old then and I will have owned it 5yrs which is the longest I have ever had a car so that in its self kinda tells me I like it.

Yeah shes not as refined or quiet as some modern so called 4x4's, but I can take it anywere pretty much get anything in it with out having that S**T I have just bought this and how do I fit it in the car or get it home feeling. HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Interesting and debatable points there FL2Voodoo.

Couple of points to consider:

1 Is that the factory time or one made up by Inchcape?

2 Depends on the labour rate at the end of the day what the bill will come out at. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

@Yorky Bob

TBH I don't know. I would think that's Inchcapes timings. As I have said I am a qualified electrical/Mechanical engineer and to be honest with all the tools to hand I don't think I could do a quality rebuild including taking it out and refitting it to the car in 4 Hrs.

Total bill was £638, the bearing and seal kit was £150, oils and fluids ? And the rest would be labour

So if you say for the kit and fluids @£200 the rest is labour and vat. It still had to be cheaper than a Land Rover dealership, the only thing that comes to mind is they work on a max £xx labour rate and the customer picks up the tab for the excess. HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Yes the warranty companies do have a maximum labour rate they will allow. e.g. £75 p/hr and if you have work done at one of their approved places, then that is what will be billed.
Its how they manage their costs to cover. Even LR Approved warranty (which is managed by a 3rd party) has a maximum labour rate, which falls short of the normal LR labour charge.
To compensate this the garages tend to 'find' other things wrong once they strip bits off for the repair. (seals, small components etc).
The garage has no extra labour time involved, and they bill the warranty company for another component to recoup some of their loss to the labour charge cap.
