There are twin horns fitted INSIDE the front bumper.
They very occasionally fail - mine filled with mud, so not really failed, destroyed possibly Whistle

You should hear a relay that operates in the fusebox under the bonnet, this operates the horns.

If they do fail, front of car has to come off, not really as bad as it sounds, then the bumper proper (heavy steel box section) comes off, the horns are in a cutout in the centre.
I think the horns are buried deliberately, they are part of the alarm system.
one of the reasons Defenders are easily stolen is because the alarm sounder is so easy to get at - without opening a door or bonnet! Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

ok so the alarm on my freelander 2 dose work when activated and also beeps if I try to lock it with a door
open or the tailgate open and its the same beep when I push the horn button . so if the relay is working
the 2 horns plus the horn next to the battery would sound ?

That's the alarm horn. Don't think that should work with the main horn. Perhaps your main horns are poggered? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

my thoughts exactly and looking at the wiring there dose not seem that it has been played
around with also if I knew where the wires were for the horns I would simply cut them and put
a couple of snail horns in the lower part and would not have to remove the front bumper.

and no mud at all under the car .

Hi,

Has anyone found the wiring loom to the horns without having to take the front bumper off?

I have and its two wires in one wrap that go into a hole half way down the rad on the right if your in front of the car I will let you know what colour the two wires are soon, and even with the bumper
off the horns are not that easy to get to as their inside a box section so I just mounted 2 horns off a audi
a4 under the air box

I've checked the slip ring, the fuse and changed the relay with no joy, hopefully i'll be able to decide which route to take now. Very grateful.

I done the same and it was the horns that were just dead so cut the wires and as I said put twin
audi horns in plus they sound when the alarm goes off , very loud (:
