2008 LR2 i6 HSE Auto Alaska White
LR2 automatic transmission oil change

Dear All

My LR2 is now reaching 10 years old with 191,000 kms clock onboard.
As per guidelines, it is strongly recommended to replace oil transmission every 250,000 kms or 10 years whichever comes first. As usual oil is cheaper than metal, so before my transmission is faulty, I am planning to replace the transmission oil

Anyone does this with LR2?

My LR2 model is 2008, HSE I6 3.2L Petrol

Thanks all

I am going to give it to the dealer as well and i found out that also they use the method of drain, 3 liter in, drain again until oil comes out clean.
Apparently you can not drain the gearbox completely.
The filter is unreachable without massive dissembling as far as i heard.

Dresdner, that is correct. 7 litres contents, drain only 3 litres at a time. (the remaining 4 litres must be in the valve block and heat exchanger). The filter can only be accessed with engine & gearbox separated. Rolling Eyes
I still need to do some more oil changes to get the contents clean. If you give the job to your LR dealer, it will cost plenty as the LR ATF is very expensive compared to the Mobil 3309!

Mine is manual gearbox! I recently get oil change by Team Valley LR for the gearbox and two diff. (front and back), the cost was about £250 I think.

Dear All

Thanks for your input, seems initial dry fill capacity 7litre, will not be replaced with new trans oil with normal drain/fill method (only 3-3.5L will come out?)

That's right, ady. You need to do the drain and refil several times. Each time the original 7 litres will be diluted some more. I have done it 3 times so far, using 9 litres. I plan to do the same again in the not too distant future.

When you drain 3L and refill 3L, that 3L will mixed with previous 4L remaining. How would the next drain ensure only or majority of old oil?

Not really sure what you don't understand.

In between refills, run the engine, select all the gears, ensure the gearbox is thoroughly warmed up or even drive it 5 miles or so ( just as I said in my link, if you read it) . By then the old and new ATF will be thoroughly mixed. Then, drain another 3 litres and replenish. Do as many time as you wish.

It is the only way to refresh the oil without disconnecting the cooler pipe and doing a "live" drain and refil whilst the engine is running, which I (and the LR techs) do not want to do at the risk of running the 'box dry.

The indy I use has bought a oil flush machine for changing gearbox oil. My car has done 38000 miles but I'm considering an oil change when it's in for its service later this year. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

A flush machine is ideal. You are lucky to have access to one. Amazingly, the LR Dealers don't have one! 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

The indy I use told me last year that that he was the only garage in Huddersfield to have such a machine. He also told me that a gearbox flush can sort out a lot of gearbox issues, many customers have told him how much better the car drives after a flush. Next time I go to the garage I'll ask how much a flush is. I don't know if a flush system uses more or less oil than the old was of doing an oil change on a gear Box but I believe it takes less time to do it with a machine. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Anybody try to do with option to drain through transmission oil cooler (no. 6)

the idea is simply,

1. put basket under transmission oil cooler
2. unplug bottom line (from transmission)
3. for line from transmission connect to a bottle
4. run engine for short time and transmission oil will be pushed
5. switch off engine
6. use sprayer to inject new oil into the transmission again using same line or above line (to transmission line)
